If the Levander Johnson incident never happened, Chavez would have moved on to accomplish a lot of great things and he would rank as a significant win for Mayweather.
I agree that Lederman's scoring was atrocious, especially for the first round. Lampley had to ask him twice to make sure he wasn't insane.

I agree.
Regardless, Jesus Chavez was an elite Super Featherweight at the time. Who gave a prime Erik Morales a very tough fight as well.

LOL. That had to be the worst unofficial round ever scored.
I remember that Lederman's scorecard was attrocious for this fight.
Lederman had it 4-3 Chavez after 7 and tied up at 4 rounds each after 8. Chavez' corner stopped it after the beating in the 9th.
Chavez is a very underrated win on Mayweather's career. It came at his breeding ground, 130 pounds. Chavez was only once defeated at the time of the fight. Chavez would go on to become a 2-weight world champion winning belts at 130 and 135. His career was derailed when he won the 135 title vs. Leavander Johnson and Johnson collapsed and died in his locker room after the fight. Still, he was a very good and exciting fighter who is still contending today.
Good ole Lederman, giving points for "aggression" but forgetting the "effective" part and "clean punching".
Chavez won a round or 2 in the 9 rounds it went. He gave a pretty decent account of himself though. He forced Mayweather to work harder, landed some good body shots. Mayweather mixed it up well like he often does. Out fighting Chavez on the ropes and on the inside for the majority of the first 5 rounds, going on his bike in rounds 6 and 7, then back to exchanges in the 8th.
Floyd had a field day with the right uppercut. Morales caught Chavez with that same punch too repeatedly.
