Roach used to train Moorer, so they knew each other well; Moorer is a respected boxing analyst (ESPN); Roach's workload is increasing, he needed a new assistant trainer, and he thought Moorer had what it took. Here's the announcement.

Moorer achieved far more as a boxer than Roach ever did, or than Mayweather Snr. did - and Manny Stewart and Eddie Futch never boxed professionally at all. You don't need to be an ATG boxer to be a good trainer. And Moorer was a very skilled boxer, despite his flaws, and is a respected boxing analyst.

Dave, my friend you are correct MM does have a better record and was the first southpaw to win the HW title in 100years. Though you wonder how MM would have faired in '94 against some like Lewis, Tyson or Bowe? Mind you he could **** esp that fight against Bert Cooper.

Hatton on the other hand will be preparing for Pac's speed and movement because they are his greatest assets, so he will have planned for what to do about it. Look what happened with Malignaggi, who was supposed to be the quicker boxer, he was shocked and did not know how to deal with Hattons speed and movement.
                  Because Malignaggi = Pacquiao???

Interesting statistic, that. I wonder why? There have been a reasonable number of ATG southpaws at other weights - including Pacquiao of course, but many others, e.g. Hagler, Pernell Whitaker, etc. So why not heavyweight, I wonder?
