Manny Pacquiao to Give Juan Manuel Marquez One Last Chance

Popular Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao is giving Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez another shot after his forthcoming match with Ricky Hatton of England to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 2, 2009
Finally popular Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao gave in to the insistent request by Juan Manuel Marquez for another match with the famous pound for pound king.
In one of the interviews with Pacquiao after the Marquez-Diaz fight in Houston, Texas where Marquez mauled the young Mexican-American boxer from Texas, he said that he is willing to give Marquez another chance.
It may be recalled that the two popular boxers who are world champions in their own rights, had fought twice. Their first encounter happened in May 2004 which ended in a draw. In this first encounter, Pacquiao knocked down Marquez three times in the first round but luckily Marquez quickly recovered and dominated much of the remaining rounds.
The judges’ decision calling the fight a draw became controversial as one of the judges erred in giving the knock down round a score of 10-6 instead of the usual 10-7 in favor of the offensive boxer. Pacquiao maintained that he won in their first fight.
As the controversy continued to find its way in the sports and boxing circles, a rematch has been arranged by the promoters for a second match after about three years since their first encounter in 2004.
Finally on March 15, 2008, Juan Manuel Marquez lost to Manny Pacquiao via another controversial decision. Judges’ decision was split but Marquez suffered a knockdown in the third round which proved to be the winning round for Pacquiao. Some Filipino boxing analysts added to the raging controversy saying that Marquez should have been declared winner.
After the controversial second encounter by the two popular boxers, Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, a company that handles Marquez fights, said that he was guaranteeing Manny Pacquiao a $6 million purse for a third match to settle the controversy once and for all.
Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter in a Wikipedia report then said, ‘I’m not saying they’ll never fight again, but you have to let it bake for a while’. For his part, Manny Pacquiao said, ‘I don’t think so, the business is over’. Since then, Marquez has been chasing Pacquiao and even went on a long and winding trip to Manila to beg for another shot at Pacquiao. Later, Pacquiao decided to move to the lightweight division where he fought David Diaz and won to become the new lightweight champion of the world.
After winning over David Diaz, Pacquiao engaged the legendary Oscar de la Hoya and stunned the world boxing fans when he pummeled de la Hoya to submission in the eight round of their ‘Dream Match’ that took place in Las Vegas, Nevada last December 6, 2009.
In his latest statement, Pacquiao said that he may just give Marquez on last chance to settle the controversy once and for all. The statement came after learning that Marquez won convincingly over Juan Diaz in their recent encounter in Houston, Texas and after Marquez called on Pacquiao again for a third match.
When asked who he thinks will win in the forthcoming Hatton-Pacquiao match, Marquez said that he thinks Pacquiao will be the winner.
The talks and controversies surrounding these two popular boxers refuse to die down since their first duel in 2004. It’s perhaps best for all boxing stakeholders to take another look at the possibility of a third fight between these two great boxers to put an end to the controversial issues once and for all. The third encounter will definitely be a blockbuster and money-maker. Boxing fans from around the world will just love to watch them fight again.
