Insider Notebook: Hatton on Pacquiao, Booze, Status

By Robert Morales - It was Monday, 4:30 p.m. in Manchester, England. Ricky Hatton had just slept for a good hour during a train ride home following a training session. We were supposed to talk to him during the ride. But his special assistant, Paul Speaks, told us three times to call back in 20 minutes because "Ricky's asleep right next to me."

Once Hatton took the phone after disembarking, it was pointed out to him that when he steps into the ring with Manny Pacquiao on May 2 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, it will be the second time in his career that he will be in one of those "biggest fights of your career" scenarios. The first one came in December 2007 against Floyd Mayweather Jr. That one didn't go well for Hatton, who was stopped in the 10th round of a lopsided fight. [details]

Will be the hardest fight for both

Pacman and hatton will deliver the best of their performance to win convincingly(ko) if they can..pacman needs to survive the pressure from hatton and the body punches that can wear him down the stretch..i saw hatton's fight against tyzu and really i admire him.if he can fight the way he fought tyzu, then pacman even how brave he is ...will be saved by his corner...on the other hand if hatton cannot withstand the straight left and right hook of pacman, then that's it..the fight will be stopped between 9 to 11 rds.this can be a candidate for fight of the year as jmm and j. Diaz did recently.

It's lucky they pointed that out to Hatton, he would never have realised otherwise.

It's a shame Robert Morales didn't take the opportunity to ask Hatton why he keeps saying that he would "win the pound for pound title" if he beat Manny, when he must know that's not how it works.

If you beat the far and away worlds best fighter, surely you are there or there abouts.

For all it's worth, I wouldn't put Hatton at no1 if he beat Pacquaio. He would go to 2, with Pacquaio slipping to 3, and Marquez at 1. Hatton needs to beat Pacquaio, and Marquez to be p4p no1.

If he beat both of them he would have a fantastic record and in no doubt the best fighter in the world.

Hatton keeps saying he will "win the pound for pound title" if he beats Pacquiao. That's not how it works, and he should know better, and someone should call him on it. You're entitled to your opinion that he'd go to #2; but at the end of the day it's down to the ratings panel and their subjective opinions. Based on historical precedent, #3 or #4 looks much more likely, IMO. But regardless of that, he says he would automatically go to #1, and he knows, and all real boxing fans know, that is simply isn't true; and I think he should be called on it. It irritates a lot of boxing fans every time he says it because it seems to show disrespect for the traditions of the sport to misrepresent how it works to the more gullible or less well informed fans in that way.

If he fights the way he fought against Kostya I will lose every bit of respect I have for him, which is not much at this point. Also, he would be in danger of getting points taken away and risk losing for fighting dirty. ****** idea, if you ask me, but actually it's the best chance he has to beat Pacquiao. If the ref is strict, basically Hatton is ****ed.

                    I love the hatton hate....
How you could hate a guy who lays it all out on the line and takes the superfights is beyond me.
