A shot at the European heavyweight title now awaits newly crowed Commonwealth heavyweight champion Martin Rogan.
Promoter Frank Warren believes the European Boxing Union will make Rogan the number on challenger after his dramatic stoppage of Skelton, who refused to put his European belt on the line on Saturday night.
“I don’t know why Matt wouldn’t put the European title on the line but that was his decision. He’s now lost that title because he has been beaten and we want to do everything we can to get Martin that fight,” said Warren.
“Belfast is going to be the stage for Martin’s next fight and I expect it to be for the European title.”
Should Rogan be named as the number one challenger, it seems that he would be matched with Alexander Dimitrenko, an unbeaten Ukrainian based in Germany as he is the current mandatory challenger.
Whether it is a European or Commonwealth title fight, Rogan is set for a homecoming at the end of May at the Odyssey Arena or King’s Hall, which he is relishing and he even threw out a challenge to World rated David Haye.
“If David Haye can come up with a million pounds then certainly I would fight him,” said Rogan.
“But it’s up to Frank what happens next. I’m just glad that he has guaranteed that my next fight is in Belfast and that’s going to be a very special night.”
Meanwhile, Rogan ruled out a re-match with Skelton, who simply folded under the Belfast man’s relentless assaults.
“Matt asked me for a re-match but he’s behind me now. I’m only looking forward,”added Rogan.
“I could tell from early on that I was hurting him with the hooks to the body and head and even though he was catching me and leaning on me there was no way I was not winning this fight.
