Actually right now Toney would beat him because Dawson cannot fight in heavyweight. This is more of a fantasy match up, Toney when he was at 175 fighting Dawson right now. Prime for prime I think Dawson beats Toney.i wouldnt say dawsons overrated, i seen him fight , boy got skills. and come on when your a wbc champion of any weight class your 4 real. dawson is a bad ass, but na prime toney would Beat him, im talking bout now. dawsons not overrated, I actually think hed beat calzaghe if he wouldnt retire. dawson vs hopkins is a mega fight i thinkComment

dawson could make heavyweight wtf?? if jones did it, chris byrd did it, hopkins walks around at 195 or 200. And dawsons 6'3 and has a bigger frame then all of them.Comment

James Toney would have too many tools for Dawson to handle. James is as technically sound as anyone out there. Has very quick hands and really has no problem handling southpaws i.e. Jirov, Robinson, Johnson with Toney even turning southpaw himself during fights.Prime for prime? I do think Dawson would be a bad style match for him but i wouldn't rule out Toney 100%. If James couldn't get to Dawson and hit him with shots consistently, then this would be a technical miss match in favor if Dawson. Hes not only bigger( at light heavyweight) but taller, faster, has a longer reach and is a southpaw. I just remember the problems Nunn and Griffin gave to Toney with their fast hands and in and out combination punching style.
Taking nothing away from Dawson who's a worthy champ and was really impressed with his victories over Adamek and Tarver. More so Adamek cos he was a green 24 year old and Adamek was the lineal, undefeated Light Heavy Champ of the world.
Toney by either a late stoppage or UD decision.Comment

Yes Toney has tools, but he has never looked good against a good southpaw boxer that uses those advantages, and Dawson is not only a southpaw but would have a considerable weight and height advantage over Toney who started out at middleweight and is 5'10. When i look at his fights against tactical boxers like Littles( who was at points dominating Toney before the stoppage) Nunn( who was also winning the fight on all three judges cards before being caught) and Johnson although that was a great win) who actually floored Toney and lost a controversial decision. Johnson was not as rangy as Dawson and was smaller, and he also fought in close quarters against Toney for a lot of portions of their fight( and their styles are nothing alike). Dawson is the better boxer, but Toney was the better inside fighter and could have Dawson is some trouble if the fight was fought at that standpoint. However if Dawson used his height, picked his shots, threw combination's and got out i really can't see Toney beating Dawson. Toney looked his best against come forward ****ers like Jirov and Barkley because they were walking forward into his impressive inside game so it was easy to get his punches off. Someone like Dawson is more mobile and would use foot speed, would give angles and not make himself an easy target.James Toney would have too many tools for Dawson to handle. Toney is just too much for dawson in his prime. Dawson has OK hand speed, decent power but, he tends to get caught and toney is a guy you don't want to get caught by. I see Toney stopping him late.Comment

Fair post slicksouth. Dawson would definitely be working from a distance pumping double jabs to set up combinations. Not many fighters would survive having slug-fests with Toney cos the guy hits hard with both hands. Toney does like guys to come at him and throw eveything they have at him.Yes Toney has tools, but he has never looked good against a good southpaw boxer that uses those advantages, and Dawson is not only a southpaw but would have a considerable weight and height advantage over Toney who started out at middleweight and is 5'10. If Dawson played the Terry McGroom blueprint of fighting James by jabbing, moving and circling James to avoid big right hand, it'd be interesting. However, Toney is a master of cutting the ring off as he did in smashing Earl Buttler which I watched last night, Dawson would have his hands full.
Height advantage doesn't bother Toney. Everybody was saying Jirov was too big and he hits too hard. Toney beat him down badly in the twelfth and should have kod him in middle rounds and especially round 10 of their excellent fight. Toney did the same with Sam Peter in their first fight also. Hats off to Toney who's a one-of-a-kind and a thrownack fighter who'll go toe to toe with the biggest and best out there regardless of weight division.
Haven't seen Dawson really hurt, so this could be a big neutralizer in their fight and would be interesting to see how Dawson would react to being hit with some big Toney shots. This would've been one helluva fight if a mid 90's version of Toney fought today's Dawson!
Would love to see Dawson/Adamek II sometime down the line.Last edited by Brunswick Assassin; 03-03-2009, 04:22 AM.Comment
