One of These Things is Not Like the Others

By T.K. Stewart - If you're old enough to have grown up watching 'Sesame Street' you can probably remember the fun little song called, 'One of These Things is Not Like the Others' sung by Bob and Susan.

The chorus was 'One of these things is not like the others, One of these things just doesn't belong, Can you tell which thing is not like the others, By the time I finish my song?'

Well, if you're a boxing fan, the one fighter that is not like the others is Juan 'The Baby Bull' Diaz.

He's preparing right now to face one of the best fighters in the world in Juan Manuel Marquez. The two will square off Saturday night in Diaz' hometown of Houston, Texas for The Ring magazine, WBA and WBO lightweight titles.

It's a highly anticipated bout that will be televised by HBO to what will likely be a raucous, full house at the Toyota Center in Houston. The winner will be recognized as the best 135-pound fighter in a lightweight division that is jam packed with top tier talent. The opportunities for the victor will be limitless.

While nothing about any of this fight is that much different from what happens in the sport of boxing on a fairly regular basis, what is different, very different, is Juan Diaz.

At only 25 years old, Diaz has already been a professional fighter for nine years. He is a former IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight champion who successfully defended parts of those titles seven times over three and a half years. He possesses an overall career record of 34-1 (17KOs). His only loss was last year and it was a costly one to Nate Campbell in which he lost all of his titles and his undefeated record. [details]

Good to see that Diaz acknowledges what Marquez can do and has accomplished. I appreciate Diaz's quiet confidence and am hoping he picks up the win in what is sure to be a great fight. IMO Diaz via UD on this one.

Good read to say the least. Indeed I am humbled by Diaz's work ethnic, hard enough for me to work 40-50 hours a week and maintain A's in college. I couldn't imagine fighting on championship level while going to college.

Mad props Diaz good luck against JMM. It'll be a good fight come Saturday night!

totally agree. a full time boxer on a championship level and a full-time colllege student on his way to being a lawyer. it takes a special kind of person to do that. he's also very humble

Setting the tone in the first 2 rounds key for both guys.......

the tone of this fight will be set in the first few solid exchanges between the two fighters. I think Marquez will try to keep the fight slow and counter Diaz in the hope of landing something significant early that will make Diaz think hard about "bully fighting" Marquez. If Marquez can hurt Diaz, this fight will look alot like Marquez's fight with Rocky Juarez. But I don't think Marquez will have enough to deter Diaz from winning a "war of attrition" via UD or MD in the later rounds.
