What should Cotto's game plan be for fighting Clottey?

Work the jab. Even if he's hitting Clottey's forearms and gloves more than he lands, it will help dictate the pace. If Cotto dictates the pace, he will win the fight, I know that sounds really simple, but I honestly believe that.
People always talk about how big and strong Clottey is and than refer to Cotto's fight with Margarito. But Clottey fights nothing like Margarito, he doesnt apply that kind of pressure, and that's the only thing we've seen Cotto have trouble with.
Cotto needs to dictate the pace, and to be honest, I think he needs to pin Clottey up against the ropes. And that's very feasible, because Clottey goes into that shell when he gets tired.
Cotto just needs make the fight move along at this pace, and pressure Clottey a bit. He aint stopping Clottey, but I think he'l win a decision.

Clottey got good handspeed, but he won't win from range. He needs to get in close and take Cotto's kinda fight away from him. Work the body every chance he gets. It'll help take Cotto's legs away, which he needs to do imo. I think Clottey can take Cotto's shots if he has to, so he should go forward behind his guard all nite. Get some ****in uppercuts in play. And every time Cotto tries to hook the body, bring the right cross right over top. If he lets Cotto move, he's gonna lose. If he can stay in his chest, he'll beat Cotto down wit his flurries.

Clottey's style reminds me a lot of Mohammed Abdullaev. Cotto had his boxing shoes on vs Abdullaev and Abdullaev covered up every time Cotto through but Cotto still gave him a huge swelling on his eye and made him quit. But what im saying is Abdullaev marched forward with a very tight defense. Cotto handled him pretty well with his boxing skills. Abdullaev punches are faster than Clottey's but Clottey is much larger and more powerful. One thing to note though, I believe Cotto is a lot more confident in his power now and more willing to stand in front of his opponents and rip them with hard shots. The Abdullaev fight was right after the Corley fight where he was rocked he just played that fight safe, kind of like the Jennings fight.
Cotto needs to stick and move and work that body when Clottey covers up. Cotto's stamina will be tested in this fight.
But I see this fight looking similar to Cotto-Abdullaev due to styles.Last edited by Boxer1590; 02-25-2009, 02:37 PM.

Cotto would have to assert himself early on and maintain a high volume of punches as Clottey can go into his shell a little bit in these kind of fights. If he tries trading with Clottey he is in for a long and uncomfortable night,he would probably still sc**** through, but he will get busted up in the process.Movement is the key for an easy night
