Pavlik-Rubio Post Report Card, Abraham Still Waits

By Cliff Rold - Two down, eighteen to go.

It’s probably unlikely World Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is heading towards breaking Bernard Hopkins record twenty any-title defenses or Carlos Monzon’s fourteen lineal, but if the defenses stay at the level of Gary Lockett and Marco Antonio Rubio, neither number is unreachable. AA is a foreign titleholder who actually seems willin to leave his nest to make an important fight, one that looks like it'd be good. It'll suck if we don't see him against Pavlik this yr.

I agree that King Arthur should take the winner of Wink/PW. Were he to defeat the winner he'd definitely get more due American recognition. However, I'm not clear on what the article is reporting in regards to Arthur making an attempt at their strap. As we know all middleweight belts are held by three people not named Wright or Williams. That fight is taking place at 160 and PW holds a belt at 154. Regardless, I think it'd be a good look.

I understand what Arum is doing from a business standpoint but he needs to stop being the dictator of boxing. He's ruining it for the fans and for the fighters who've earned their shot. Pavlik V. Sturm to unify three belts, Abraham V. Wink/PW in the meantime and to get a bigger name in the US, then let the winners face off for all the belts.

      Get it done.

The only reason Abraham still fights at middleweight is Kelly Pavlik. He struggles to make the 160 pound limit. Maybe thats the reason why his workrate is so low. He wants Pavlik and after that move up to 168. If Pavlik is not available in the summer, i guess the fight will never happen and Arthur moves up.

That would be a tragedy for Pavlik's career. Arthur and Kelly are the only legitimate Middleweights in that weak division. Sturm won't fight anyone so he doesn't count. If this bout doesn't happen it will be a big stain on Pavlik's record.

Abraham should get his shot at Pavlik either in his next fight or the one after, with none of this `profile boosting` **** from people who seem keener to inflate Pavlik's bank balance and watch him beat inferior opposition than see him fight his biggest challenge in the division.

Abraham already hammered Miranda on Showtime.

When Pavlik hammered Miranda he got Taylor.

Abraham does the same thing and gets held at arm's length, with so many American fans saying `oh, has he done enough to deserve his shot?`

            Double-standard.

miranda and pavlik fought each other for the #1 spot to fight taylor. arthur fought him at 166 the 2nd fight that meant nothing since miranda was ktfo, and not at mw anymore. so the double standard is not really a good example, but i agree they need to make the fight.

Agreed, i really don't understand a fan making excuses for his favourite boxer not to fight the best....

I don't think you can find many people who don't want to see Abraham and Pavlik fight each other as it is the only meaningful fight in the division. Kelly and his camp want it also. Hopefully it happens this year.

BTW: The Miranda vs Pavlik fight was a title eliminator, that is why Pavlk fought Taylor after the bout.

AS the division is so weak I really dont see why the fight cant be made, maybe if AA fought Strum and got him out the way and Pavlik took care of another mandatory then each fighter bringing two belts to the ring would give the fight a little more credance?

For that division the fight needs to happen.
