simply because you can handpick your opponents. Unlike other sports, "greatness" in boxing is relative. A sport like Tennis for example, you won't ever win a grand slam without facing the best players. Winning the soccer world cup requires that as well.
In boxing, you can avoid all the top fighters in your weight class and retire and still be called "great" or fight bums for 10 years, pick a couple of oldies and then retire with an undefeated record...
