Can Top Rank Really Believe this is the Best Way to Promote a Fight?
On Saturday morning's edition of Sportscenter, an ESPN Deportes segment showed the Miguel Cotto-Michael Jennings & Kelly Pavlik-Marco Antonio Rubio weigh in, but zero highlights of any previous fight of any fighter. If Top Rank is serious about promoting the fight, why not allow Sportscenter to show highlights of any previous fight by Cotto or Pavlik? If HBO's 48 hour highlight rule is in effect, Top Rank and other promoters must have this provision taken out. (HBO instills a 48 rule after any non PPV fight which only allows highlights of that particular fight to be shown within those 48 hours.) This provision is not only bad for the promoter and future promotions, but it is also bad for HBO considering Cotto and Pavlik will most likely fight on HBO for their entire careers. In general, this 48 hour is bad for the entire sport. Highlights not only promote a previous fight and encourage viewers to watch the replay, but they also play a key role in hyping up future fights, such as tonight. This of course, is what ESPN does with every other sport, but sadly the brain trust in boxing have yet to figure it out and understand exactly how the lack of highlights undermines the sport as a whole.
