Yeah got to agree brealand was the best amature, also tony ayala jr has got to be worth a mention never lost amature fight from the age of 8, at 16 beats the feared big puncher lamont kirland in the golden gloves final. Also donald curry was a class act

Actually, Alex Ramos and Ayala split two fights as amateurs

Ayala also turned pro young...didnt have big international career... he is nowhere near the top of all time amateurs.

yea, but what about Taylor, Whitaker, Paul Gonzalez, Teo Stevenson, etc etc??? I dont think Ayala rates with any of them. He ws good, dont get me wrong. but not of their amateur caliber

I started seeing a few Amateur gems due to Scully. I was amazed when I saw the post of Hearns vs Pryor. It was a hell of an Amateur fight.

Scully after looking at some of those old fights I was wondering if Amateur boxing is even a good indicator or prolonged training ground anymore for a pro-boxer? It seems that amateur and pro-boxing have a widening gap.

Amateur boxing -with the implementation of computer scoring and four two minute rounds, has STOPPED being a solid breeding ground for professinals... it is something barely resembling boxing now....amateur boxing in the 1970's and 1980's was something similar to pro boxing...you could see some GREAT fights but now under the new rules the most accomplished amateurs are guys who very easily wouldnt even make a dent in the pro game...if you look at a national tournament line up dont always look to the gold medalists as future champs...look at a tough kid who got outboxed on the ridiculous scoring earlier on..a kid who doesnt want to play tag
