Unless Gatti really needs the money he should stay away before he gets seriously hurt although a final home town fight must be appeal and I think it would be for the canadian national title (one he never won if my memory serves be correctly). The record of the man he may face suggests he doesn’t have much of a punch, but I still wouldn’t want to see him fight again.
Gatti made very fan friendly fights and was a promoters dream, even a casual fan could turn on and be gripped by a Gatti fight. He wasn’t world class though as much as it pains me to say, when he came up against the top tier fighters he did come up short more often than not, but take nothing away from him, he was one hell of a fighter.
His boxing skills were underrated but his tendancy to brawl once hurt and have little to no defence at times means he could get badly hurt if he comes back. Buddy McGirt extended his career by making him box more but he always said when he thought Gatti was done he wouldn’t train him anymore and after his brave effor tagainst Baldimor McGirt and Gatti parted company. I thought age caught up with him in that fight, he wasn’t doing too badly until his stamina started to wane.
I think his problem was, as he got older and couldn’t make the lighter weights anymore, he didn't have a big enough punch to mix it with the welterweights, and the punishment he had soaked up during his career meant his resistance to heavier punchers waned as well, watching him soak up punishment against a likeable but limited Alfonso Gomez really sealed it was time for Gatti to bow out.
The famous 9th round in the fight Ward vs Gatti fight was mentioned, its interesting a friend of mine has decided to start showing more boxing in his pub (which suits me!) and asked me to put together a montage of knockouts and footage, without fail people always ask about that round.
I wouldn’t say it was one of the best round in boxing history as boxing went out the window, Ward broke Gatti ribs and the pain etched on his face is real, not like the footballers in this country who go down with the slightest nudge. Bravey to get up and then immediately take punishment to those ribs again and then start firing back is testiment to boxing, as brutal as boxing is at times there its rounds like this which prove what can be done if you will yourself to push to your limits in whatever you do.
Also against Damgaard Gatti fought with a broken hand I believe which makes a the victory even better, however the opponent wasn’t top level.
When you think Gatti by word associate you get warrior.
