to say rap is for the sheep of the world is pretty cliche. typical line from someone who listens to nothing but rock. not sayin that you do, but i hear from these dudes all the time.

I will listen to anything that challenges me intellectually, and emotionally.

Inconsequential "disses" and rhymes that are nothing more than a clever play on words is for the masses. And if a quirky rhyme challenges you intellectually, then you're just ******.

Personally, I would rather be ******, then at least it would be justified.

No, I don't fill in the blanks on random members' posts. I just take them at face value.

95% of what people do with their lives is inconsequential. Art is life, and this is more consistently reflected in the freewheeling, hot-off-the-press, throwaway nature of hip-hop than any other musical form at present. Art should, in essence, be disposable...because to over-intellectualize and glass-case it is to miss its purpose entirely. Which is to reflect the moment, however inconsequential or significant it may be in the grand scheme of everything (where nothing means anything, anway). This point was made as far back as a half century ago when Andy Warhol made art out of literal, disposable trash...a soupcan.
When you're kicking it with your friends, relaxing, shooting the bull around, telling jokes, telling stories, entertaining yourselves, what do you do? Turn around and tell them that the good time they're having is inconsequential and a waste of time...and that they should be doing important stuff, like, saving rainforests, solving homelessness?

The sharp juxtaposition of triviality and gravity is what makes hip-hop such a truthful form in the first place anyway --- check the segue from 'Izzy Izzy Ahh' to 'Why You Hurt Me' on Missy Elliot's first record if you don't believe me --- so to dismiss its inherent, necessary novelty value is, again, to entirely miss the point.

Having fun, being creative purely for its own sake without straining to impart some labored 'message', isn't an emotional or spiritual experience anymore? Get the fuck out with that.

The built-in flaw in so many generalized arguments against large slabs of supposedly 'unsubstantive rap', is that so many of the detractors are intellectually and emotionally constipated people with stilted, twisted ideas of how emotion and intellect should be defined.
