I read an interesting article at some boxing site(don't think it was this). It said how titles are almost the reason people are hating boxing. There are so many that you can't even keep track. In my opinion, do you really think someone would rather watch a fight with a title on the line than one with 2 amazing fighters going at it just for the love of the sport? So many boxers without titles are more entertaining than many with titles. My favorite boxer for example, Manny, is full proof that you don't need a title or care to have one to have just as much fun or entertainment. Barrera was equal to this. I really think titles or no titles, watching a fight is what it's all about.
Do Titles Really Matter?

The belts do matter to most fighters. I'm not going to get into a debate with this anymore but I know for a fact that the fighters want the belts with the exception of a few fighters who can bring in money with or without a belt.Comment

Belts matter to the fighters because theres more money in it for belt holders but it sucks because theres to many belts for each division anyway and its hard to unify some divisions because some belts dont really countComment

Belts matter to fighters and promoters because it helps in fight promotion. Of course, many of us don't like the many organizations offering such belts.
But it does show that these belts earn big bucks for most fights. That's why there are a lot of these organizations because they still earn money even if they give the fightfans a real pain in the ass.Comment

I think when you're starting out, then yes definitely, a world title belt matters. Because you're trying to make a name for yourself and get exposure and money. This all comes with having a belt because it gives you leverage in negotiations. However once you've achieved this and proved you are the real deal and have won big fights against bigname opponents then boxing fans wouldn't care whether you fight for a title or not. They will buy the ppv because of WHO you are not what belt you hold. Like they say, it's the fighter that makes the belt not the other way around. Seriously, if you could see tito trinidad fight tomorrow, would you care whether it was for a title or not? I don't think so.
Peace.Comment

like the other guys said, belts help you make more money and get faster recognition, but i miss the old days ( before i was born ) when there was ONE belt and a real undisputed champ. These alphabet soup titles are bull****, without ever winning a major title Irish Micky Ward never had any problems proving himself and creating a solid fan base. It may take a little longer without an cheap alphabet soup belt, but the fans know who the real champions areComment
