Diamond Boxing goes one on with “Sugar” Shane Mosley, see who he would like to face next plus his thoughts on Pacquiao – Hatton and much more:
1. First of all congratulations on your huge victory over Margarito, what's been some of the reactions that you've been getting ever since you slayed the Terminator?
Man nothing but great reactions, everybody thought that he was so much stronger than me and that Margarito would throw more punches than me, but none of that ever happened.
2. I feel that with you beating Margarito, it now makes you the man to see at 147, is that the main reason why you chose to fight Margarito over Andre Berto? I mean obviously if you had faced Berto and beaten Berto, you wouldn't be in this great position that you currently are in now, would you agree?
Yeah man, you know the thing is that I just love to fight the top guys, I always have, and Margarito was at the top, so I chose him. I really want to thank Margarito for fighting me.
3. Ok Shane so what I am hearing is that you guys at Golden Boy Promotions are working to put on a lightweight tournament to see who the top dog really is, I feel that it is a great idea and I am looking forward to it. Now how about doing a welterweight tournament? A great idea would be to have a Mosley/Mayweather fight with the winner fighting the victor of the Pacquiao/Hatton clash, how does that sound to you?
Sounds really good to me that would be great if that were to happen. I spoke to Richard Schaefer recently and the top 4 guys that I want are, Pacquiao, Mayweather, Hatton, and Cotto. Any of those four would be fine with me.
4. Speaking of Pacquiao and Hatton, who do you think will win and why?
Well first of all, it is going to be a great fight, yeah Pacquiao is faster but Hatton will be there to put the pressure on Pacquiao. When Oscar fought Pacquiao, Pacquiao was able to do whatever he wanted to do because Oscar did not use his advantages over Pacquiao, in fact Pacquiao came in as the heavier guy. With Hatton, they both will probably come in around the same weight, I just think it is going to be a great fight, I can't wait for it.
5. As far as Mayweather goes, we all know that you have been chasing him for quite some time, If Money May decides to make a comeback from his temporary leave and if he chooses you as his return bout, how does a Mosley/Mayweather fight play out?
Well I am a little bit bigger than Floyd and I am quick, a lot of fighters failed because a lot of guys can't hit him, but I am quick enough to hit him. I would be able to hit him to the body and upstairs where others couldn't. He wouldn't be able to hurt me. It would be a good fight.
6. I've had the honor to rap a little with your father Jack, Jack told me that as a youngster you had the privilege to spar with not only the great Julio Cesar Chavez but also the great Azumah Nelson, What were those wars like? Any other legends that you got to trade leather with back then?
It was great, a great experience I learned a lot sparring with those guys, against Chavez he had just knocked down Oscar so I had to be sharp, the fans watching were calling me Meldrick Taylor. [laughing] With Nelson, I was only 15 and we were both 126 pounds, we would go at it. I have sparred with a lot of great fighters like Genaro '' Chicanito'' Hernandez, he was another great fighter that I sparred with.
7. Not just cause you are doing this interview with me, but in all honesty my top 3 favorite fighters from this era are Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya, and yourself. The main reason why I chose you three is because you three have always dared to be great and your resumes speak for themselves. If you had to pick the top 5 fighters from this era, who would you pick? Who would make Shane Mosley's list?
First of all thanks a lot for including me, I have always pushed myself hard to be prepared to face anyone, also to be in the Hall of Fame, I feel that I have proven to be a Future Hall of Famer. As far as my list goes, man there are a lot of them, ok you have to include De La Hoya and Trinidad, I am with you on those two, there is also Hopkins, Roy Jones, you got to have Roy in there, Holyfield for sure, Mike Tyson the Cus D' Amato Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez for sure, Lopez, man he was phenomenal.. Too many out there to really name ..Whitaker..
8. A Mosley/Trinidad fight has always been on my wish list, why did that fight never happen? If it had, how would it have played out?
Wow, well against Trinidad I would have boxed him, Trinidad can be out boxed. I would have boxed him smart to take away his strong left hook, I kind of see the fight playing out like the Margarito fight, they both are around the same height and both have heavy hands, it's just one of those things that never happened.
9. Out of the young lions out there, the young fighters that have shown me shades of a young Shane Mosley are Andre Berto, Timothy Bradley, and Yuriorkis Gamboa, who would you say reminds you the most of yourself?
I would have to go with Berto, Berto has speed and power and also goes to the body, I haven't really seen Gamboa all that much to really say anything as far as him reminding me of myself.
Well Shane I will say that Gamboa to me may be the fastest fighter that can punch in combinations since yourself and Meldrick Taylor, only difference is that Gamboa has been dropped a few times already, where with you, you just never went down, that may be the biggest difference that to me creates a ceiling to Gamboa's potential.
Yeah I know what you mean, I will check him out the next time he fights.
Well Champ, I myself along with Diamond Boxing thank you for your time, keep at it champ.
Thank you guys for having me, take care.
