  • This is bad any way you look at it. The rules strictly prohibit the use of any substance (water, plaster, or anything) on the hand wrapping. They were cheating. Margs must take responsibility because he hires/employs his trainer. If he fights over in Mexico while suspended in the US, he will end up being suspended even longer. He needs the rest anyway after that whooping he got!

Cotto vs Mosley 2 or Cotto vs Berto?

    • I don't agree with Mosely. It's impossible for you not to know that your trainer while wrapping your hands is placing inserts in them. Mosely is a classy guy and he will not speak bad of another fellow boxer but to say that you're too focused on the fight to notice anything like that is crazy. Right before some fights when the cameras go into the dressing room I see plenty of boxers looking at their trainers wrapping their hands and seeing if it feels good.

It wasn't as obvious as everyone seems to think - did you read the articles Silencers linked to? He was supposed to place inserts in them. The only thing he has been found guilty of was that the inserts were moist.

VAN NUYS, CA.-Antonio Margarito lost his world title, lost his pound for pound ranking and now he’s lost his right to fight professionally in the United States.

          ...............
Though charges of plaster of Paris were being tossed around the country on Internet sites and blog spots, what it came down to was the simple fact that two knuckle pads inserted in the hand wraps were moistened.

          That’s it.

That's all he's been found guilty of. That's just a factual statement. Those sites are all reputable and all say the same thing. You're the one who's biased, if you write off Maxboxing, SweetScience, and The Ring, so easily.

Yes, but it makes no difference what Mosley said.

              • Mosley has to be pretty careful about what he says about this, he himself is blaming the people around him for his steroid use so I don't think it's very wise of him to blame Margarito outright considering his own circumstances.

Fair point, but still, reading the detailed reports about what came out at the hearings, I think it's perfectly plausible that Margarito didn't know. The key point is that it wasn't the case, as most people seem to think it was, that he was found guilty of inserting inserts when no inserts should have been inserted; the inserts were supposed to have been inserted; and all he was found guilty of was that the inserts were moist. That's illegal, but not that obvious, and I think it's plausible that a fighter focussing on the fight wouldn't have noticed that they were moist. It'll be a different story of the lab results come back and say there was plaster on it, but in terms of what actually happened at the hearing, and what he was actually found guilty of, I think the jury is very much still out on whether he knowingly cheated. Especially as the commission didn't say they thought that Margarito had knowingly cheated; they said they thought the trainer had knowingly cheated, but what they said about Margarito was that he has to take responsibility for the people he employs, and that's the reason they suspended him.

I disagree, how could he not know what was going into his wraps? Focused or not, a fighter knows when his wraps feel wrong.

Given these were knuckle pads being inserted on top of tape after he'd been taped up, are you certain they would have felt noticeably moist to him?

Note that The Ring article says:
When the ruling revoking Margarito’s license was announced, a hush fell over the crowd of more than 100 people at the Van Nuys State Building. No one seemed to expect it.
So The Ring's reporter seemed to think the jury is still out.
