He destroyed Jeff Lacy in a career-defining unification showdown in 2006, which he followed with a superb victory over Mikkel Kessler.

He then travelled to the United States to outpoint American greats Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr at light-heavyweight.

"He is the best, without a doubt," Warren told Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek show.

So he became champ in '97, and didn't get a 'career defining win' until nearly 10 years later? Something is wrong there...

1989 it was seen as a legit title.

If you have nothing intelligent to say, then don't say it.
Read the article, have an opinion about it and think before you post idiotic **** all over the place.

was it really? I could have sworn it took much longer to be accepted, because they had that Damiani guy as their first Heavyweight champion even though Tyson was the real champ at the time.
I dont doubt it existed in 1989, but I thought it was looked upon like the WBF or IBO titles are nowadays until much much later on. but I dont really know, Im bad with dates.

Yer it wasnt seen as a big one until the Eubank/Benn era. They kinda put the WBO on the map as did the G-Man.

It was not recognized as a legit title until the late 90's or early 00's.
When you won the belt most would drop it to fight for the WBA IBF or WBC.
