No way in hell can an MMA fighter compete in boxing, making it sound like a transition from MMA to boxing is simple.. Get the **** out of here!

There's no doubt that western boxing techniques are much more effective than most of the hand strikes from other martial arts due to its economy of motion and the short distance it has to travel to the targets. It's all well and good within the sport where the hands are protected from injury via the use of wraps and gloves.

However, mma being a somewhat more well rounded form of combat geared more for the street than an arena due to the implementation of more parts of the human body for fighting than just the hand strikes of boxing, can only complement rather than hinder a pro boxer's attributes.

Both sports are popular among fight fans with mma gaining a bigger and ever growing fan base. There's a reason why it has grown in popularity since the early days. And many hard core boxing fans enjoy it just as much as regular boxing.

Point being, both sports are here to stay for the long haul just as pro wrestling like the WWE has its own fan base.

Boxing's popularity hasn't waned much as was evident by the record setting match between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Part of it has to do with the marketing of both sports.

                  When has that happened?

I don't consider MMA a street fight. Sure, it might help you in protecting yourself, but there is a big difference between a formatted system like BJJ or Muay Thai and street. Sure, there are forms that were born out of the results of dirty fighting like Catch, but in no way is it Street.

Boxing and to an extent Muay Thai (knees) are the most important aspects of stand-up striking in MMA. Unlike kickboxing, throwing kicks leaves you vulnerable to takedowns so boxing takes precedence. Fighting with the hands low rather than a traditional guard can actual be a benefit as it allows you to sprawl, but most punches thrown by MMA fighters are more awkward than anything else. Hitting on the ground is a different matter, however.
