Now, to the question at hand. I think in this day and age it is alot easier for fighters to get to world titles and even make multiple defences before facing anybody with a pulse. Look at someone like Andre Berto for example. Regardless that he lost to Luis Collazo, he is the kinda fighter who, if he avoids the unification fights could carve out alot of wins against fighters of the Steve Forbes variety. I don't think he can duck the other top welterweights all that long though to be honest.

I can honestly see Arthur Abraham retiring undefeated, but I imagine he'll be around the 35-0 mark at that point, not almost 50 like Joe. Can't think of anyone else at the moment.

What does you fighting in your backyard have to do with anything? Is that supposed to be a dig at Joe Calzaghe's resume? The guy has fought all over the world against numerous world champions so I have no idea what you're talking about if that's what you're trying to say.

There is no "lack of quality" in his opposition. Joe beat every top fighter who was willing to face him and many more contenders besides. There is no point lingering on what could have been, it is what was that is important, and what Joe done through his whole career is beat every single opponent he faced. Name me 10 fighters in the past 30 years on Joe's level who have done that?

Do you think the claim that no casual American boxing fan knew who he was until he beat Bernard Hopkins in any way lessens his acheivements? It's the casual fans loss, not Joe's. The whole of Europe has known who Joe Calzaghe is for over a decade now, and the wider world has been well aware since the Jeff Lacy annihilation.

Oscar De La Hoya may well be a more popular person than Joe Calzaghe, but Joe's legacy pisses all over Oscar's, and Joe is by far the better fighter of the two. The only people who would claim otherwise is a couple million US housewives, and some really, really, really in-denial people.

Calzaghe paid his dues man, he didn't pass on no one unlike Floyd Mayweather whom had a chance to give Cotto his 1st loss while Cotto was at his absolute peak, he passes on him so he can take on the much smaller man (Hatton) whom has already shown the world that he doesn't belong in Welterweight. Calzaghe fought Kessler in Kessler's weight and beat the **** out of him, even had him saying "Calzaghe crushed my dreams" the next day nd do we even have to talk about Lacy? these were 2 prime fighters and Calzaghe beat them both relentlessly, he then beats Hopkins and Roy Jones to cement himself.. true Roy was far past it but Bernard wasn't, Bernard till this day still got a lot of juice left so Joe wasn't fighting no average man when he fought B-Hop, give Joe his credit man he deserves it.. I respect him much more than I respect Floyd Mayweather Jr any day, Floyd tainted his career by not continuing to fight the best fighters in the world. for the spot he was claiming, for the spot of #1 pound for pound king you MUST fight the best, this is why Pacquiao is the best now because his last 5 fights were all hard for him and his upcoming fight is probably his hardest due to the fact that Ricky will be at his NATURAL CAREER WEIGHT, a weight where he has yet to be defeated in.. He unified the SMW division something winning all 4 belts. Saying he ducked fighters from other divisions is bull****, Hopkins was never going to fight him at SMW neither was Jones. Remember Calzaghe moved up in weight for his first fight against Hopkins and went to America.
Hopkins would never change weight AND fight another champion abroad in similar circumstances.
