I don't remember anyone besides Team GSP predicting a win in that fashion. Most thought it was going to be a competitive fight, and many people, including a lot of professional MMA fighters, thought BJ was going to win it.

There also wasn't a competitive moment in the De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight and I thought the fight was great.
Of course, like everyone else, a competitive fight usually makes a more entertaining one, but I am also entertained by masterful performances, even in one sided fights.
This was no mismatch.

Penn fought Machida who is a light heavyweight. So the issue of weight, and size was even less of an issue in this fight.
Styles make fights not weight. Its very easy to say in hindsight that this would be a blowout, but the fact of the matter is that both guys were on a tear, and have vastly improved since they last met.
And LOL @ Thiago Silva being a 'tomato can'. I'm sorry but you don't get a 13-0 record by being a 'tomato can'.
As for this article, I agree 100%.
This is what I've been trying to say this whole time on NSB, and most of you ignorant fools are too busy thinking I'm bashing boxing, when in reality I'm just pointing out the fact that boxing can take a page from what the UFC is doing (and boxing promoters are doing this, finally)
Silva is good on his back but he doesnt have great takedowns and his striking is AWFUL. And if you have no takedowns you will never get Machida down. Hell a great wrestler in Ortiz couldnt even lay a hand on him. Silva is a mediocre fighter at best but nobody wants to admit that.
The UFC is successful at what they do because they have a huge stable of guys in their organization. Its all about name recognition and alot of them are names from their Reality show garbage TUF. Alot of these guys have been fighting for years in the UFC and thats why they are still able to put guys like Bonnar, Karo on a main card despite them being mid-level guys in their division. I mean they are all over this Jon Jones guy so why not put him up against an average but tough durable veteran in Stephan Bonnar. Jones will win and look good doing it. Theres a reason why Joe Silva is getting paid the big bucks.
And look at Wanderlei Silva. That guy is terrible and has lost 50% of his last 10 fights. Hes one-dimensional and hes not even good at his one-dimension. Hes lost to Liddell who cant buy a win and hes lost to Rampage. And than be beat Jardine whos another average fighter at best. And Jardine is headling a PPV with Rampage.
And lets not forget about Mark Coleman fighting Shogun Rua. Coleman is last time I checked 300 years old. Why the hell is this guy fighting as a co-headliner on a 50 dollar PPV? Than they are going to put Rua who looked awful against Coleman against Liddell which Liddell has a great chance of winning and if Liddell wins they will try to position him for another title shot. HAHA.
The UFC is doing a great job and boxing can learn from them but people need to relax about claiming UFC is just all about the fans and about putting on stacked cards. Because they arent. And the next few PPV's and the most recent ones prove it.

And in terms of boxing cards. Pavlik/Bhop, Cotto/Margarito, DLH/Pacquiao, Pacquiao/JMM were great fights. I wasnt able to catch the Calzaghe/RJJ fight but when I saw it I thought it was a good fight and a good display by Joe but the fight lost its appeal because of RJJ's age and I could see why people wouldnt buy that fight. It wasnt worth it in my opinion.
In boxing I care about the main event. And the last few big boxing fights have lived up to its expectations. Some were one-sided like pacman/DLH but it was something nobody expected and it was an amazing display by Pacman.
Im not saying all the UFC PPV's were bad, some were good but i've become an elitist when it comes to what I watch. I mean I have absolutely no interest watching 2 mediocre strikers duke it out with 4oz gloves. I mean Wand/Rampage entailed Wand swinging like a bafoon with his chin out until he got KO'd. Or 2 mediocre pro boxers duking it out on a PPV like Lytle/Davis. Those guys would never be on a big boxing PPV so why would I pay to see them in the UFC? And Mir/Nog, Nog looked like a punching bag. Mir threw the same basic punches and Nog couldnt even move his head or do anything to counter it. UFC 91 undercard was solid but Lesnar/Couture? Are you for real? Lesnar is 2-1 in MMA and 1-1 in the UFC? How the hell did this guy earn a title shot? Oh yea, hes popular.
Boxing has had quite a few disappointments and there are quite a few problems with boxing. Nobody is denying that. But the UFC could do alot, ALOT better with the talent they have and with the exception of a couple, their PPVs have been mediocre at best.
