Montiel-Morel Will Be For The Interim-Title, Says Penalosa

WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa insists he hasn’t relinquished his 118 pound title even though he is moving up in weight in a planned title fight against WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez. [details]

Nice. So Penalosa isn't willing to defend his title against Mares, Moriel or Montiel, but he insists he's not abandoning it. Penalosa has defended once in 1 1/2 years since he won the title. The WBO should say F--- U.

i'm surprised about this development. i don't recall if gerry has had someone who punches as hard as juanma (unless someone corrects me on this).all i know is he did great in his questionable loss against ponce de leon and even managed to wobble the mexican. however, juanma cut through ponce de leon like hot knife through butter. gerry is a great technical boxer, probably the best ever to come out in my country and has never been knocked down. i'd like to see how his chin and his skills would hold up against juanma. i'll keep a close eye on this one.

personally though, i was of the opinion that gerry first make his mandatory defenses...
