Do big fights that become mismatches hurt boxing?

Happends in all sports. How many SuperBowls or NCAA championship games were blow outs.

How many World Series were 4-0 or 4-1. I mean its best when they live up to the hype but very few Marquee games and fights do. Thats why when they do live up to the hype they are treasured that much more i.e. Giants vs Patriots

Yeah I guess that makes sense but it just seems that regular season match ups in any mainstream sport deliver for casual fan's more than boxing does these days.

I just think boxing needs a mega fight that delivers for hardcore and casual fan's alike to really put boxing back in the limelight.

Super Bowls and World Series' do not include teams that hand pick their opposition or look to play the team that'll get them the most money. These mega fights lately have been bull**** handpicked fights. Calzaghe is hand picking the fights that will get him the most money, and avoiding Dawson, whos the best light heavyweight in the world.

yes, mismatches do hurt boxing. this is the reason they have weight divisions. just look at every valuev fight. the fights are **** mostly because of the mismatch. the shorter guy has to have a fighting style that would be very boring to watch in order to beat the much taller fighter. Physical mismatches are not good for boxing IMO.

We have a lot of "regular season" type of matches that are excellent. Vaz-Marq was great even though it never received much attention till the 3rd fight. There are a lot of very good regular fights.

What I'm saying is that the public knows that Mega and Super doesn't always mean the best show. Even when the 2 clear cut best fight its not always guaranteed to be exciting. Thats why fighters with exciting styles get more chances and make more money i.e. Gatti. Fans know when they see a Gatti fight they are probably not seeing the best fighter in a weight class but they know they will probably see a good fight.

Yea they do, I think Wlad vs. Haye will bring the heavy division in the eyes of the "casual" and any other fan further down.

All that Hype, 50 000 in attendace, only to see a KO within 3 in a complete mismatch. The next day we'll see articles with the following title:

"THe heavy weight divisions at its worst"

We'll never know because Hopkins and Joe both know that fighting Dawson is flirting with a loss. Dawson at least fought Johnson. Let me see Hopkins or Calzaghe fight Johnson and I'll admit to being wrong.

well, it depends.

Tyson is probebly the most famous boxer ever, and what did he do? beat the hell out of people. I mean, they were disspointed when he didnt knock them out.

people that arent into boxing normally are simple people. they want excitement, and they want to see things that they dont feel they could ever pull off. they want to know and really get the feel that these athletes are supernatural and unmatched. but nonboxing people cant notice skill sometimes unless you shove it in their face and it make it flashy.

so in other words...mismatches like Mosley-Margarito? I imagine they would love that stuff, although they would probebly prefer that the action was condensed into about 5 rounds. (limited attention span, I guess). had a brutal knockout end, huge shots landed, and even the other guy looked amazing eating all those shots.

mismatches with only so-so action? obviously theyre not going to go for that.
this is ignoring storylines and stuff...people that dont normally watch boxing eat up crazy personalities or interesting backgrounds/buildups to fights or other quirky things.

thats mostly due to boxing not having a regular schedule, I believe. I mean, lets face it, boxing is pretty hard to follow for the normal person. when its football season, its a piece of cake to follow for the most part. If all you want is to watch football, then bam, there it is on Sunday on major television networks.
to watch a boxing match, generally you have to go out of your way. theres no fixed schedule, and you ahve to find the network its on, and then find someone with the network/buy the ppv if you dont have it...
people are lazy, and thats all there is to it. and boxing is too hard for them to follow.

the best we have is probebly Friday Night Fights. which is good...FNFs is picking up some really interesting fights. but lets face it, for the most part, FNFs doesnt have megafights. and if people dont tune into those fights, then they wont know whats going on in the rest of the boxing world either.

one other thing is that we dont really have a superbowl of sorts. we have our megafights, but no true event where the best in the sport all face each other on one card. if you tell people that two guys are the best in the world and give them proof, theyll generally believe you, without even having seen the two before.
