The Luis Resto - Billy Collins Jr Incident

On June 16, 1983 Luis Resto unexpectedly beat undefeated prospect Billy Collins Jr at Madison Square Garden in New York City in a 10-round unanimous decision. The fight was the undercard for a bout between Roberto Duran and Davey Moore.

However, Collins' father and trainer, Billy, Sr., discovered that Resto's gloves were thinner than normal. When Billy, Sr. reached out to shake Resto's hand, he felt only leather over fist. Screaming that he thought the gloves had no padding, Collins, Sr. demanded that the New York State Boxing Commission impound the gloves. An investigation revealed that someone had removed an ounce of padding from each of his gloves. However, it was obvious even before then that the gloves had been altered. Collins' eyes were swollen shut by the end of the 10th round, and the rest of his face was so badly swollen that it was impossible to believe a light puncher could have inflicted such damage.

Collins suffered a torn iris and permanently blurred vision, ending his career. He died only months later when he drove his car into a culvert while intoxicated. Some commentators have speculated that the loss of his livelihood drove him into a downward spiral.

After a month's investigation, the New York State Boxing Commission determined that Resto's trainer, Panama Lewis, had removed the padding from Resto's gloves. It also determined that Resto should have known the gloves were illegal. The commission suspended Resto's boxing license for at least a year. Since most state boxing commissions honor sanctions from other states, this effectively banned Resto from boxing in the United States. Resto's win was subsequently changed to a no contest.

In 1986, Lewis and Resto were both put on trial and found guilty of assault, criminal possession of a weapon (Resto's hands) and conspiracy. Prosecutors charged that the bout amounted to an illegal assault on Collins and that Resto should have known that the padding had been removed from his gloves. Resto served 2.5 years in prison.

At last report, Resto was living rent-free in the basement of the Morris Park Boxing Gym in the Bronx. After 15 years of trying to regain his license, he was finally allowed to work as a cornerman by New York State.

In 2007, Resto apologized to Collins' widow, Andrea Collins-Nile, who is suing the state of New York for not protecting her late husband. Resto also told Collins-Nile that Lewis placed plaster underneath his hand wraps, greatly--and illegally--increasing his punching power. Combined with the removed padding, this meant that Resto had been hitting Collins with rocks for 10 rounds. The hand wraps had never been confiscated. Resto also visited Collins' gravesite and said, "I'm sorry for what I did to you." In 2008, he told the The Tennessean that he'd been burdened by guilt over his involvement in the scheme for almost a quarter century.

At a 2008 press conference, Resto said that he knew Lewis had taken the padding out of his gloves and had done so at least twice before. However, Resto said, he didn't protest at the time even though he knew it was wrong. "At the time, I was young," he said. "I went along."

People have speculated on whether or not someone would benifit from having plaster in their hand wraps. I dug up an old article about Luis Resto and how he used plaster and cut out some of the padding in his gloves before a fight. So yes it can be beneficial too a boxer to load up his glove/wraps.

Look at it from this prospective you have your hands tapedlegally. if you ever boxed and had you hands taped correctly and legally you know what it feels like and how your hands are protected. The weight of your hands plus the weight of the tape make your hands pretty hard and heavy. the usuage of the gauge and the tape give a decent apd to protect your knuckles. Your hand pretty much feel like cement already. As long as you keep a tight closed fist your hands will feel pretty brick like. If you cant keep a tight fist or you are using 16oz gloves then it might take away from your power and make your hands feel a little buit softer.

Now imagine you line the tape of you wraps with powder plaster. This substance is in the inside of the tape and wraps. Once it gets wet it conforms to the surface and sticks like glue and hardens. You knuckels would be in almost a soft cast. if anyone here has ever had a soft cast on a limb or hand they would know how it feels and how hard it is. Seeing that you have had your fist clinched most of the time your are fighting onc ethe substance hardened it would be esentially part of the wrap and seeing how it is only on the outside your knuckels and you have some tape and gaus betwen your skin and and the substance it shouldnt cut or hurt your hands it would only make your hands feel and hit harder. The weight would increase with the moisture and the substance would harden. Each blow landed would be like getting hit in the face with a brick. Imagine that.

Then imagine this a fighter who seems to get stronger as the fight goes on. A fighters whos punches seem to get harder as the later rounds approach. Imagine your hands inside a boxing glove about the 5th or 6th round how much moisture would be in there. What round does Tony usually come on on anyway?? I am not saying that Tony is guilty by no means am I judge and jury. It will be investigated I am sure by the athletic commision and the reults will be revealed to the public soon I hope. I mean how many days does it take for a lab to check into something like that anyway? Hopefully for the good of boxing it turns out he didn't try to cheat and we can no longer question any of his wins prior to that night. On the flip side if he did cheat what should be his penalty? California will certainly suspend him. Las Vegas officials have already said that they would respect the officials decision in California and not allow Tony to fight there either. Is this worst then Tyson behavior and the ear biting incident? I mean Tony if this is true he could have killed Shane or caused some serious perminate damamge.

the after math has yet to come since the word is not out on the test of this alleged material taken from his wraps. We know Richardson has done this before with Tito and other opponents to try to get into someones head before a big fight. When a fighter is accustommed to having his hands wrapped a certain way it becomes a conforatability factor in a fight knowing your hands are protected. Having them rewrapped and wrapped a way you are not used to can have a affect on your punching power and your mental stability during a fight. The confidence to throw a hard shot and know you hand is not going to get damaged weighs heavily on you. Richardson knows this and that is why he emplyos this tatic often if he is allowed too.

my thought really dont matter as much but Richardson sure did get in the head of many a boxing fan. Hearing Jim Lampley report this Saturday night got me sitrred up. I know this much if I were going into a fight and I found out that my opponent tried to load up his gloves and potentially could have hurt me or even killed me I would be throwing my punches with the best of intentions if you know what I mean. That certainly would have given me a little bit more motivation. So hoepfully Tony will be cleared of this issue and the black eye that has been delt to boxing will be lifted and we can all go on with talk of fights coming up and match ups we want to see. because i surely know the Tony I saw against Cotto I wanted to and will want to see in there against other Top 10 guys. To all you Margarito fans I am nin no way bashing you fighter so ease up on me.....Lefty
I wanted to bring this back to the light since people are starting to talk abot the possibility of Freddie Roach taking this fighter on. The fact that he turned down the option to fight in Mexico and wait for the reinstatement hearing. The fact he is still being seen with the Capitello is ridiculous. If he really thought that there was wrong doing and it is admited by his trainer then why is he not distancing himself from him? There are lots of questions still here about what happened and what he really knew or didn't know. But honestly where do you stand in all this?....Lefty

Hey Lefty. First I want to say that i'm a Cotto fan but more than that a boxing fan. I always thought there was good reason why Margarito was avoided by floyd, mosley, etc after seeing his fights. We need to remember that before the cotto fight cotto has never been knocked out or had his face look as bad as that fight. We also know that cotto was doing very well and probably winning 5 of first 6 rds. Correct? From the 7th rd on Margarito's punches were affecting cotto in more ways than ever. Cotto has received shots that were more precise from other fighters in past. Look at Cotto's face AFTER Mosley fight and look at Cotto's face after 9th rd in margarito fight.

Like you mentioned in post "A fighters whos punches seem to get harder as the later rounds approach. Imagine your hands inside a boxing glove about the 5th or 6th round how much moisture would be in there. What round does Tony usually come on on anyway??" Do we know if Margarito used plaster or anything illegal in Cotto fight? NO ! But we can "SUSPECT" that something was very wrong by how cotto looked after 9th round and knowing margarito was going to use plaster in mosley fight. Cotto took a massive beating and if he did not take a knee in 11th rd, we might've seen another RESTO vs Collins. Common Sense needs to be brought in this discussion no matter if you like or dislike cotto and margarito. Cotto beats Mosley and does not have 1 scratch and mosley destroys margarito AFTER the plaster is removed.

We might never know what happened but for Margarito to say he did not know and he is seen with the trainer who lead to Margarito being suspended, you need to question Margarito's WHOLE career, the same way we question baseball players caught on steroids. Andy Pettite from Yankees says he only used steroids once......DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT? David Ortiz/ Manny Ramirez say they don't know how steroids got into their system. Do you really believe that? Some fans say Margarito only used plaster once.....Do you really believe that?

Truth is you have an excellent point and we are on the same waive length. I for one think that Tony should be banned for the rest of his life. If in fact it was found to be plaster in his gloves. As a fighter you know when you hands are beng wrapped differently. You can feel whether or not you have some foreign substance inside your wraps. I mean I never had anything in my gloves but I could only imagine that it would feel different. As for the fact that did he or did he not use plaster in the fight with Cotto well we will never know for sure. We can only speculate that fact. Once a cheater always a cheater. If and when Cotto does get another crack at margarito i hope he demolishes him in much the same way Mosley did. It will put it to rest once and for all. the fact he has NOT distance himself from the low life that supposedly tricked him and cost him 1 year of pay and total embarassment to the boxing world and his fans amazes me.....Lefty
