NEW YORK -- While he awaits the results of a California State Athletic Commission investigation into whether he attempted to pack his taped hands with an illegal substance before his WBA welterweight title fight against Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing in his July 2008 win over former welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.

Speculation has been that Margarito, who is being accused of attempting to apply a plaster-like substance under his tape to increase his punching power before his fight with Mosley, may have attempted this tactic before, specifically in his brutal win over Cotto. Not so, according to Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

"You can't prove a negative," Kizer told SI.com. "But I'm as certain as I can be that Margarito did not do anything illegal against Cotto."

According to Kizer, fighters are closely monitored during the taping process in Nevada. Representatives of the commission check and recheck the fighters' hands, and the opposing trainers are allowed to be present during the taping.

It is not uncommon, according to Kizer, for fighters to attempt to add extra padding to their tape in order to protect their hands during a fight. Oscar De La Hoya's camp asked to be allowed to place an extra strip of tape on De La Hoya's hands before his recent fight with Manny Pacquiao but was denied because even an extra strip is against the commission's rules.

"Most of the time, fighters are just trying to protect their hands," said Kizer. "I've heard of fighters wanting to put tissue inside their gloves to keep their hands safe."

Kizer said he hopes that the situation with Margarito turns out to be a misunderstanding.

"I hope nothing comes of this," said Kizer. "It's dangerous for any fighter to do anything illegal that could add to their punching power. Think about it -- what if one of the punches kills someone? Now we're talking about manslaughter."

Still, if Margarito is suspended in California, said Kizer, Nevada will "respect the suspension" and not permit Margarito to fight in Las Vegas for the length of the suspension. Kizer added that even if Margarito, who is not currently licensed in Nevada, was not suspended, the boxer would have to satisfactorily explain his actions to the Nevada commission before they would agree to license him.

The results of the California investigation are expected to be announced this week.

If it wasn't for MOSLEY'S trainer NOONE would've noticed the illegal plaster in the recent fight. The commission was there and it took Mosley's trainer to notice it. The idiots in Cotto's corner did not notice anything and i bet if Mosley's trainer was present or someone that is VERY WATCHFUL, they would've noticed it. That doesn't surprise me. It's really hard to prove something like that. It doesn't mean he didn't do it though. I still don't think he would do it against Mosley and not Cotto. The Cotto fight was it for him. If he would've lost that fight, he would've been finished as far as being at the top. You don't just start doing that **** this late in your career.

Exactly ! He would've done it for the Cotto fight and not the Mosley fight. The rematch will either shut up Cotto fans(myself) or Margarito fans. THe winner fights Mosley. I don't want to hear Mayweather's name.....he is retired. When Mayweather decides to unretire, then we'll discuss his name. No mayweather, benitez, chavez, hagler, etc. THEY ARE RETIRED !

I saw two stains from Margarito handwrap in the Cotto-Margarito fight. A redish stain and a yellow stain. There was one similiar stain in the Cintron Margarito fight too. So the handwraps look different unlike what I've seen from other fighters.

Plus Margarito left his wraps on contrary to other of his fights including on one occasion where he won the belt. Perhaps because he knew they'd weren't easy to be removed and all the little bricks might fall off.

If you watch the fight you can see one of the trainer whispering secretly in Antonio Margarito ear unlike the Margarito vs Mosley fight because they didn't had no need because the plaster was found on time. So they didn't have anything to hide.

Margarito started out just touching Cotto to cover the power of the plaster than picks up the pace by hitting him harder with the plaster because he was losing the fight. He knows if he used all the power from the loaded gloves he would become more su****ious. So he leaves it for the later rounds.

The coaches in Margarito corner know there are being watch so they use clever words to encourage Margarito to start using more of the power behind the handw****d plaster.

You can listen to one of Antonio Margarito trainers asking Margarito how his hitting power. Because they know he can feel when his gloves start getting heavier as the liquid starts to dry.

I dont care if its the las Vegas Nevada. They never would admit having made a mistake. As long as theres no prove of it, they can denied it. Why would they admit of makeing a mistake when theres no prove to it? Better for them they can claim to be superior to California athletic commision.

They did high speed. Cottos corner is not as experieced as others, but Evangelista, was telling him get off the ****ing ropes, but Cotto was so tire he couldt do ****. They drew a blueprint on how too beat Margarito, Richardson just perfected it. He added holding and bodypunching and theres your perfect blueprit on how to make Margarito look like Mayorga!!!!!!!!!

Now, I think he needs to hire a second trainer, just to have a different look on things. I say like a co trainer, who can rectify, any mistakes evangelista could be making with Cotto. Plus the fact that Cotto doesnt have that big of respect for his uncle. He is always disrespectfull to him. Cotto needs to have a Floyd SR. type trainer, who have the balls to tell his fighters to shut the **** up and stick to the plan, and ****.
