1. Manny Pacquiao {Junior Welterweight}
Pacquiao shocked us all by thoroughly dominating Oscar De La Hoya on December 6th. We all expected a mismatch and we got one as the former flyweight champion embarrassed the one time middleweight kingpin. This win has made some mention his multi-weight class dominance with the likes of all time great Henry Armstrong who defeated plenty of bigger fighters in his day.
After plenty of confusion and rumors the fight wasn’t going to take place (just like what initially happened during negotiations between Pacquaio and De La Hoya) he will be facing Ricky Hatton May 2nd on PPV. The two finally settled on a 52-48 purse split in Pacquiao’s favor, giving us a fight we all want to see. This is actually a legitimate PPV fight where Pacman (who is listed as a Junior Welterweight as that is where he is set to continue) should be the betting favorite.
2. Joe Calzaghe {Light Heavyweight}
Following his November 8th lopsided victory over Roy Jones Jr, Calzaghe claimed that “boxing is dead”. This not only upset tons of people involved with the sport, it made us wonder what is next for Calzaghe. Joe was scheduled to make an announcement as to if he wants to continue his legendary career after this past Christmas but it has not yet come. Outside of past injuries which could reoccur, Joe doesn’t have much of a reason to retire as there are some good fights left for the undefeated Welshman.
If he does return I think we would all like to see him fight Chad Dawson, if he once again defeats Antonio Tarver in March. Let’s face it Joe, Dawson is an undefeated world champion willing to travel across the pond to face you so let’s make it happen!
3. Bernard Hopkins {Light Heavyweight}
Score one for the old guys! Hopkins, 43, a 4-1 underdog and loser in 3 of his last 5 fights dominated previously unbeaten Kelly Pavlik October 18th in a virtual shutout. Jones-Hopkins II was mentioned for a short time but now is out of the question with Jones’ bad loss to Calzaghe. There won’t be a rematch with Calzaghe and nothing else is scheduled at the moment. If Bernard doesn’t finally retire for good, he may sit and wait for a big fight to fall into place.
4. Juan Manuel Marquez {Lightweight}
What a performance! On September 13th, Marquez successfully moved up to Lightweight and stopped Ring Magazine champion/potential hall of famer Joel Casamayor. Marquez controlled most of the bout and dropped Casamayor twice in the 11th, knocking out the Cuban for the first time in his career. Marquez will tangle with IBF/WBO/WBA champion Juan Diaz February 28th on HBO. This is yet another intriguing bout and one where two top fighters with completely different styles are set to tangle.
5. Shane Mosley (Welterweight)
Wow, score another one for the old guys! In perhaps the best performance of his already legendary career, Mosley dominated Antonio Margarito, scoring two knockdowns and ultimately a TKO over the granite chinned WBA champion. Following a TKO victory over Miguel Cotto, it appeared Margarito was impossible to hurt as Cotto tagged him with everything but the kitchen sink and still didn’t hurt him. Even with a recent divorce, questions about his doping, and a new trainer, Mosley turned back the clock and was as sharp as ever.
Promoter Bob Arum said win or lose, Margarito will have a rematch with Cotto as long as Cotto defeats Michael Jennings as expected. After looking awful vs Mosley, why not have a Mosley-Cotto rematch instead? That is definitely a PPV fight and a return bout of a very competitive 2007 contest.
6. Miguel Cotto {Welterweight}
Following his shocking loss to Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto will be fighting Brit Michael Jennings February 21st on PPV for the WBO Welterweight crown, which Paul Williams vacated. I can’t blame Bob Arum for having Cotto come back in a fight where he can capture a world title against a minimally dangerous opponent. As previously mentioned, it would make sense to see Cotto and Mosley have a rematch if he brutalizes Jennings as expected.
7. Israel Vazquez {Super Bantamweight}
Even after some whisperings, Vazquez’ status is still unknown at this time as he is recovering from eye surgery. We do however know he won’t be facing Rafael Marquez a fourth time since Showtime grew impatient and gave the date tenativly scheduled for the fourth fight to another promoter. WBO champion Juan Manuel Lopez says that he must face Vazquez in order to be the man in the division. If Israel is healthy and doesn’t move up to 126, I think we would all love to see him fight Lopez or 6’0 unified champion Celestino Caballero.
8. Ivan Calderon {Junior Flyweight}
On August 30th, Calderon was schooling the much bigger Hugo Cazares, whom he previously beat. “The Mini Machine”, as I like to call him appeared headed toward an easy unanimous decision victory but had to settle for a technical decision following a nasty cut he received from a headbutt. Calderon’s next move as not yet been announced but this boxing master appears set to return to 105 lbs. Although it appears unlikely, it would be nice to see Calderon fight Roman Gonzalez who at 22-0 (20 KO’s) had unbelievable power for a Strawweight.
9. Kelly Pavlik {Middleweight}
Following his shockingly one sided loss to Bernard Hopkins at 170 lbs, Pavlik will now return to the division where he belongs. Although Pavlik looked amateurish against Hopkins, he still has a nice fan base. Pavlik will be facing mandatory challenger Marco Antonio Rubio in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, where 5,500 tickets were sold in just 30 minutes. The fight will take place February 21st on the same multi-site PPV that features Miguel Cotto vs Michael Jennings.
10. Paul Williams (Junior Middleweight)
Williams is definitely a man on a mission and a force to be reckoned with from 147-160 lbs. On November 29th, Williams earned his third consecutive KO in three different weight classes as he stopped gritty three time world champion Verno Phillips to win the WBO “interim” Junior Middleweight title. Williams will move back up to Middleweight (where he stopped Andy Kolle in September) to face former champion Winky Wright April 11th on HBO. Regardless of his 1 ½+ year layoff by fight night, Wright figures to give Williams major problems.
Honorable Mention: Rafael Marquez, Chris John, Antonio Margarito, Wladimir Klitchko, Nate Campbell, Ricky Hatton, David Haye, Juan Diaz, Vic Darchinyan, Chad Dawson.
