Sugar Shane Mosley Delivers His Sweetest Performance

By Jake Donovan - Fighter A beats Fighter B, who previously beat Fighter C. Therefore, A beats C, right?

    Wrong. Very wrong.

That’s what much of the boxing public was once again, as “Sugar” Shane Mosley, amidst a sea of pre-fight distractions and scandal, turned back the clock in delivering by far the best performance of his 15-year career. A 4-1 underdog coming in, Mosley made Antonio Margarito and the oddsmakers look damn foolish for eight-plus rounds before knocking out the steel-chinned Mexican in the ninth round of their 12-round welterweight title fight.

The bout took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, in front of an announced crowd of 20,820, the largest ever for a boxing event held at the venue.

Margarito’s pre-fight insistence that his name carries this promotion was confirmed the moment both fighters were ushered to the ring. Despite fighting less than 45 minutes from his hometown of Pomona, CA, Mosley was greeted to a chorus of boos amongst the sold out arena. [details]

Mosley was impressive, but Margarito looked very uncoordinated in comparison to Mosley who put the plan together. The luster of Margarito is gone for good as he has been caught useing a hard-plastic substance imtertwined in his hand-wraps and note if it is a plaster type substance it gets harder as the fight goes on is a blow to the tornadoes legacy of coming on late in fights. Credit to ****m Richardson for always being on his game catching Trinidad before the Hopkins fight now Margarito before the Mosley fight resulting in wins for his fighter. Cotto should now face Mosley again and disregard Margarito as Cotto can now say he literally did not know what hit him when facing Margarito. Mosley by KO was never even a consideration for most people , good win Mosley as he will proably face Berto and Cotto this year and the division should have a unified Champ by the end of 09.

Viva Mosley! I was asked about this fight today and I didn't hesitate to pick Mosely over Margarito because of his superior speed, underrated power and experience. I can't believe the Margarito camp didn't better prepare him to counter Mosley's holding. If you've watched Mosley fight recently, you know he won't hesitate to tie you up when you come in close.

Anyway, Margarito will never be the same fighter again. His career was likely permanently damaged by this devastating knockout loss. Mosley definitely goes down as a first ballot hall of famer with this win.

Shane's best was on show right there tonight. Now, Floyd Mayweather's claim that he can beat Margarito easily gains ground. The problem with that point, however, is that Mosley KO'd Margarito because he was fast, had a proven chin, and had considerably more punching power than Floyd, enough to stop Margarito in his tracks.

Now, Floyd, how about fighting Mosley? A sure-fire first ballot Hall of Famer, surely, you can't say he's a nobody like you always said about Margarito. The educated guess here is that Floyd won't ever mention Mosley's name. Mosley will be one more fighter Floyd ducks.

I agree with you. If you combine what he may have lost in the Cotto fight which not many talk about; that fight was no walk in the park for him, combined with the brutal fashion he lost in tonight, I think its fair to say he will be physically finished after this fight.
He may remain as a "name" opponent, but as a fighter I think Mosley may have done him in. It's too bad too, cuz I was rooting for Tony...
