Well, there's a certain degree of truth to that. Mayweather, because of his personality, will never get the universal respect that few attain in the sport. Calzaghe is another example, but much of the hate originates from US fans. Even after having dethroned Kessler, B-Hop, and Jones...people still complain that "he hasn't proven anything". If he wouldn't have proven anything by beating B-Hop or Jones, then why the hell were people saying "Jones is gonna' get him!"
It's hard to have an undefeated record and command mass respect. There's always someone new you have to test yourself against.
The problem with Mayweather is: he left the sport while being in a weight class where there were SO MANY potentially intriguing match-ups.
The problem with Calzaghe is: his last two opponents aren't what people consider top of the list. So, tell me...Dawson? If Calzaghe were to beat Dawson, the excuses would start raining down: "Dawson was too green." Of course Dawson is. He's got skills, power, boxing ability...but Calzaghe is truly something else.
