I am not at all sure that Gov. Pinol mistook "workhorse" for "trailhorse", Ronnie, nor do I think that he has taken your use of the word out of context.
The word "trailhorse" is, as you know, a pejorative, in politics, sports and many other spheres of endeavor. Calling a competitior a "trailhorse" means he does not belong in the same arena as the other protagonist, much as a trailhorse does not belong in race tracks: it has no chance of winning against thoroughbreds.
You used "workhorse". It means you put premium on the fighter's work attitude and do not think anything about his talent and capacities. It can mean that you think of the fighter as merely "an opponent" who brings nothing else but "work" to his fights. Not much power, not much skill, not much defense, etc. In short, it appears that you think the guy has little chance of winning.
I've been made to believe that Gov. Pinol is a former sports journalist. As such, it is difficult to understand that he could have misconstrued the word you used. He must have a reason for resenting the label.Last edited by grayfist; 01-22-2009, 09:02 PM.

Nonito Donaire is John Henry or Secretariat. Only smaller....
I like the way he fights.

Maybe short fights or something.
The thing I like is he knows how to time people and can get off with either hand.
I heard on and off that he's had some weight problems in the past.

I think you're spot on about those short fights. Most of his engagements that went the distance were early in his career.
Since 05, when he started going 8 rounds and beyond, he stopped 8 of his 12 opponents. (I won't fuss if some would put that at 7 of 12 because of the nature of the Methlane stoppage).
One the few who went the distance with Nonito since 2005, is Karen Harutyunyan who has been stopped only once in something like 20 fights. Donaire kd'd him but the Armenian came back some. Donaire was declared SD winner.
Another is Oscar Andrade who had not been stopped in five years. He had faced the likes of Gerry Penalosa, Julio Zarate and the Bantamweight Columbian protige' Yohnny Perez (18-0-0, 13 KO's) before meeting Donaire. He lost by UD to Montiel.
These two were pretty durable ones. And then there was Mthlane who reputedly had never visited the canvass.
Anyway...I am among those who think Nonito shall prove to be a multi-division champ. I hope he stays on track.
