Let’s get it Straight Pacquiao Is the Man to Beat

As of this morning Manny Pacquiao is still the main draw in boxing. Nothing has changed since his scintillating performance opposite Oscar De La Hoya last December. As we await the conclusion of the battle for revenue split, the idea of a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight creeps up. How can it not? We were warmed up to this idea within a week after the "Dream Match" concluded but as the tides settled, we were forced to tuck it away. As a dedicated boxing fan, I wouldn't want anything over a showdown between "Money" and "Pacman". Not even Pacquiao-Hatton. The "Hitman" is a great draw but the idea behind the fight isn't who comes to see who more. It's the more deserving prize fighter that gets the bigger share. At this time, I cannot put Hatton on the same platform as Pacquiao, let alone say that they are equals in the ring. No, I'm not Filipino, and I'm not from the UK. I am, however, an avid follower of these two, along with many others and there are plenty to choose from. As a result from being such a close follower, I can say that Pacquiao is by far the greater shareholder for rights to claim of 'the man to beat'.
Let's entertain this idea, imagine Mayweather never fought Hatton. Ideally one would lean towards the assumption that Hatton can draw more people than Mayweather, and that's just the UK alone crossing the big sea. But the split, as prizefighters and overall title claims, would be in favor of Mayweather. This is because Hatton is NOT the better fighter. He is not the 'man to beat'. And you can already put down in stone who gets called out left and right. The money comes from the fight revenue, but the share must go towards Mayweather. That is because side by side, the names of Hatton and Mayweather already draws a picture for boxing fans. Why would this be any different when it comes to Pacquiao? In this case, I see the fight billing as Hatton calling out the pound for pound king. Not the other way around. Considering Manny's climb up, down, and around the lightweight/welterweight divisions, the knockout loss Hatton suffered at the hands of Mayweather, and out of respect for 'the man to beat', I agree to a bigger share for Pacquiao. Now if Hatton upsets Pacquiao and they rematch, it would be fitting to give the "Hitman" the bigger purse. Or even if he upsets Manny and moves onto another fight afterward, he would receive that aforementioned billing as 'man to beat'. Then he would get, and probably WANT might I add, the bigger share. And maybe then he'll understand that it wasn't the number before the zeroes that made the difference, it was the respect. Now you can go 50-50 on dollar signs, but if you're the top dog, would you take the 50-50 respect when you know you deserve more?
Rex Salud, a close businessman within Pacquiao's entourage, has mentioned to the Filipino public that two additional deals were presented to the P4P king. Neither has been accepted. In fact, the weaker of the two follow-up offers that asks for a 52-48 split in favor of the Pacman was declined over the weekend. The second deal is a better suitor, 55-45 for all revenue outside of England, but he would have to cut down to a 45-55 split for UK prize monies. I don't see either of the two budging over this deal either. Manny Pacquiao has made February the deadline for this contractual agreement. Philippine news has also mentioned that boxing's main man is already looking at as many as four potential fillers if Hatton doesn't concede. Hatton, however, says that he will not budge on the agreed 50-50 split although Bob Arum made the two pitches to Pacquiao's camp this past week. I can't grasp the idea of Arum making the counter offers without the knowledge of the Hatton camp so if harmony is to ensue from this bickering, I'd put my money on the Hatton camp to fold. Besides, Pacquiao can take his status into a different prize fight, who will Hatton fight that can rebuild his reputation after an embarrassing one-sided beating from the former king pin, Mayweather.
Regardless of what happens, whether Pacquiao can lure Mayweather out of retirement or Hatton talks turn up something worthwhile, we will see a great fight come May 2nd. A definite opponent has yet to be named and already I'm trembling from the excitement to be. Will it be current number one against former number one or will we actually see the current talks materialize? Or will it be someone else entirely?
With the shortest month looming around the corner, we will start to see more aggressive talks to unfold soon. I can't see this quarreling to go far into February. Look for more added twists after this Saturday's welterweight showdown between division king Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley.
