"Fighting Words" – The Baby-Faced Assassin Takes One Last Shot

by David P. Greisman - He still looks far younger than his 35 years, this Mexican warrior who was but a teenager when, two decades ago, he first got paid to walk up those steps and onto the canvas battlefield.

Confined within four ropes on four sides, he thrived in one-on-one combat, earning the nickname of “Baby-Faced Assassin” and carrying it with him even when it was no longer quite as apt.

A look at many of the men whom he met in combat reveals veterans far removed from their glory days.

Barrera and Kennedy McKinney inaugurated the first-ever episode of “Boxing After Dark” by trading knockdowns over 12 great rounds. McKinney stopped being a contender in 1999 and hasn’t fought since 2003.

Barrera and Junior Jones went head-to-head in back-to-back bouts, Jones taking both. Jones last fought for a world title in 2000, last fought in 2002.

Barrera and Erik Morales had three close wars, their rivalry never reaching a resolution even after their rubber match. Morales has been on indefinite sabbatical since 2007.

Barrera-McKinney was in 1996. The Barrera-Jones fights were in 1996 and 1997. Barrera and Morales took each other on in 2000, 2002 and 2004.

Morales, the closest thing to Barrera’s mirror image, has spoken of coming back, of contending again. [details]

this fight is important to both fighters, for barrera, to put his name again in the limelight and for khan, to erase the nightmare he has with prescott. i expect barrera to initiate the attack early in the round to "intimidate" the young briton.

this is a battle of experience against youth.

    the best fighter wins.

      Good luck to both fighters.
On one hand Amir Khan is a larger fighter, he is much younger and fresher, he has faster hands, a good jab and good offensive skills. In this situation he would generally be the favorite. But.... Berrara is a warrior, and he has a massive experience advantage over Khan. When you consider Khan's glass jaw, this fight is really a pick'em.

oh man.. if Roach would say "he could no longer pull the trigger.." the result would be conclusive! Barrera should not tarnish his HOF reputation unnecessarily.. because despites of the setbacks at the end of his career, he will remain as a big champion to many boxing fans hearts!

              comeback

This is the brickman again. Barrera has the chance to live the life of a champion again. He will lay it on the line with this brit. The man has been waiting for a chance like this. I dont think he can beat the pac-man but it would make a good match if he clearly beats this brit. Maybe pac-man wouldnt even give barrera a rematch because barrera will give him a boxing lesson. Im not saying he will knock him out, but he will cut him and outpoint him. Thats if he truly beats on this brit. I would like to see one of these two legends " morales or barrera " destroy the pac-man. Pac-man is such a great warrior, where this will bring back all the great hispanic heart in these future boxers in this sport. Boxing was at its prime when the hispanics took over the boxing world. Everybody was paying top buck just to see hispanic get knocked up. Viva boxing.
