He was a big MW but didn't deliver too many KOs towards the end of his run. I think he has good pop, and it is underrated. The last few people he fought at MW were very skilled defensively. Look at Hopkins, Wright, Spinks, and we all know that Ouma is a tough SOB.
How do you rate Jermain Taylor's punching power?

Yea, no doubt Taylor can ****. After the beating Hopkins, at 170, gave Pavlik, Kelly was nowhere near as hurt in that fight as he was in Taylor/Pavlik 1.
It's his style that doesn't result in many knockouts, not his power. He's got a great jab and makes it his primary weapon. He also seems a little gunshy after his first KO loss to Pavlik. When he really lets his hands go Taylor definitely has a lot of pop. -
It's a 7. He's got solid power but his technique is lacking. His punching power and jab weren't terribly significant against better opposition. The best thing he has going for him is his athletic ability and physical dimensions.
Taylor could have gotten Spinks out of there had he fought a little smarter. He needed to approach that fight like he did the Wright fight. Just throw power punches over the top of that weak Spinks jab. Manny was tellin him...the guy didn't listen.Last edited by oldgringo; 01-17-2009, 06:25 PM.Comment

He's not got cement in his gloves but he's got good pop; he just hasn't found his ability to finish the last few times he's had opponents hurt.
Case and point, the Pavlik fight. He had Pavlik hurt worse than Hopkins did, and Hopkins weighed 180 lbs and pounded on him for 12 solid rounds. Smoger said if Taylor had landed one more solid blow when he had Pavlik in trouble in the 2nd round, he would've stopped the fight.
He had Lacy hurt several times as well, and said after the fight his hands hurt pretty bad after hitting Jeff's head so hard. Lacy's never been stopped, either.
Other than that, he's faced defensive fighters in Hopkins, Wright, and Spinks.Comment

taylor has good pop, alot of ppl are comparing him to hopkins who pounded on pavlik for 12 rounds but never hurt him or got him down or tbh looked like he was going to get him down. but hopkins has never been a great power puncher, for such a big guy at MW he never really had a huge ****.
taylor though does have pop, he can give you enough to make you think twice about going in again and keep you off him and has enough power to hurt you if he catches you flush (pavlik fight 2nd round).
but i dont see him hurting any of the top contenders at SMW, i think kess is a fairly strong fighter with a sturdy chin, froch, andrade and jean pascal are too tough he might have a chance of hurting someone like bute late on in the fight but thats about it.
how do you rate taylors chin?Comment

taylor is an underrated puncher IMO. he can **** but he lacks a killer instinct and now he is afraid of punching himself out thanks to Pavlik. JT got a solid chin too.
power = 8
chin = 8Comment
