EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: KERMIT CINTRON
By Mellow Mood
MM: We just got the word that you're going to be fighting Sergio Martinez on HBO, for the WBC interim title. Can you give us some thoughts about that, and tell us what we can expect to see from you? "I'm extremely excited about it, it's a big opportunity for me, moving up in weight class, and challenging one of the best guys at 154. I'm here in Houston training hard, and I'm going to be very prepared for this fight. I took it as a big step, a big fight for me, and I'm trying to win the title."
MM: What made you decide to fight Martinez instead of Joshua Clottey? There was a lot of talk about you and Clottey fighting.
Kermit Cintron: I think that Martinez is a bigger fight for me. It's going to be on HBO, so a lot of people will get to see me fight. A lot of people are going to get to see me beat Martinez.
MM: Will you ever fight at welterweight again?
KC: I definitely will. I'm looking for a big fight now, I'll fight anywhere from 147-154.
MM: What do you know about Martinez as a fighter?
KC: He's a good boxer, real skillful, I know he's a southpaw. I'm going to be prepared for anything he brings to the table.
MM: Are you aware that Margarito is the only guy to have wins over you, both of you have lost to Margarito? Does that matter to you at all going into this fight?
KC: Yes, I know that he lost to Margarito. We're two different fighters, and Margarito is different as well. He fought Margarito back when he wasn't anything. I think he's a lot better than he was back in 2000. I'm at my peak right now, it's going to be a good exciting fight.
MM: Other than victory, do you have a prediction for the fight?
KC: Just a victory. All I want to do is win the title, and then the door is wide open for me to represent at 154. I'm really excited about this opportunity that came up.
MM: What's your biggest motivation going into this fight?
KC: The doors are going to wide open for me if I win this fight. Anywhere from 147-154 pounds. I've got my kids and my wife, that I have to take care of. It's a big fight, it's a big fight for my career, it's important to me.
MM: Are you looking at this as a do or die situation, as it relates to being on HBO, and in high profile fights?
KC: Yes, I think every fight is serious. Any fight can end your career. If you want to call it do or die, then let it be do ir die.
MM: There's a lot of time between now and February 14th, so give us some closing thoguhts.
KC: All my fans out there, tune in on February 14th on HBO. You'll get to see me in a big exciting fight.
