Manny Pacquiao — who represents the sport of boxing — deserves the chunkier and bigger slice of the pie in his May 2 showdown with British Ricky Hatton, a key Team Pacquiao member said yesterday.
"I will lose my admiration with Top Rank if it will not be able to give Pacquiao what he truly deserves," said Cebu boxing promoter Wakee Salud when told about the likelihood of a 50-50 split in revenue between Pacquiao and Hatton.
"I believe that Manny should get more and a 60-40 split in favor of Manny is good enough," Salud said.
The Los Angeles Times had reported late last week that owing to Hatton’s huge popularity in England, which translates into hefty pay-per-view numbers, it is likely that the 30-year-old from Manchester and Pacquiao will evenly share the pot.
Pacquiao’s reputation rose dramatically late last year after forcing Oscar De La Hoya quit on his stool just moments before the start of the ninth round.
Top Rank chief Bob Arum as said Hatton’s ability to draw big pay-per-view numbers is nothing to be sneezed at.
Hatton’s fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007 drew more than one million pay-per-view buys and he is widely regarded as Britain’s top ring attraction owing to his aggressive fighting style and colorful character.
With the probable exit of De La Hoya, Pacquiao now carries the load of making boxing tick despite the rise of mixed martial arts.
Since Pacquiao fights with a daredevil attitude and a carrier of a lethal punch, ringsiders are optimistic that he has what it takes to lead the sport.
Meanwhile, Salud bared that Pacquiao is returning to Manila from Los Angeles either on Jan. 15 or 16 with the whole family, including the newest addition to the Pacquiao family—Queen Elizabeth (who was born on Dec. 30).
"It’s not advisable to bring home a baby when it’s still less than 15 days old," said Salud.
"So instead of them returning to the Philippines tomorrow (today), they were forced to stay for a few more days. Besides, Jinkee is celebrating her birthday on Jan. 12."
"There’s going to be trouble if Pacquiao hurries home back to Manila without his loved ones," said Salud, chuckling.
