Cuba’s emerging superstar Yuriorkis Gamboa is just about ready to be matched for a world title but in the meantime he keeps active when he meets veteran Roger Gonzalez in the main event on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights on Jan. 9.
My understanding is that this is a scheduled 10-rounder, although the bout seems unlikely to go the distance and is basically a showcase for Gamboa before he moves on to bigger things.
After a somewhat unimpressive points win over durable Darling Jimenez last May, Gamboa has looked devastating in his last two appearances, blowing out Al Seeger in the first round and Marcos Ramirez in the second.
While Gamboa was heavily favoured to win these fights, he wasn’t expected to stop his opponents quite as quickly as he did. Ramirez, for instance, was unbeaten, admittedly against mostly low-grade opposition, and was considered sturdy.
When Gamboa is in full flow and letting the combinations fly he is a spectacular fighter. The Olympic gold medallist has had only 12 bouts but he is 27 and a mature, highly skilled boxer-puncher. He hasn’t even come close to losing although he has suffered a couple of flash knockdowns, mostly due to being careless and getting caught off-balance.
When Gamboa beat Jimenez he did a bit too much showboating and even seemed to be fading a bit towards the end, causing HBO analyst Max Kellerman to remark: “The Cyclone of Guantanamo has been reduced to a tropical storm here, I think.”
Gamboa showed his best form in the Seeger and Ramirez fights, though. He looked almost a different fighter in these scheduled 10-rounders, no messing about, straight down to business.
How the fight with Gonzalez turns out will depend largely on which Gamboa shows up — the one who fights in spurts and shows off with hands down, or the one who is all business.
“Speedy” Gonzalez, 30, is a reasonable test for Gamboa, with just two losses in 29 bouts. He was stopped in each of these defeats, though, in six rounds by Jhonny Gonzalez as a 122-pounder, then in the last round by sharp southpaw Cornelius Lock in a sizzling bout last June on the now-defunct Wednesday Night Fights.
Gonzalez had a bit of trouble making weight for the fight with Lock but he looked almost a certain winner when he hammered his opponent with a series of punches in the seventh round. Lock came back strongly, though, and, with victory in sight, Gonzalez got caught and stopped in the last round.
I would have felt a bit better about Gonzalez’s chances if he’d had an interim bout after meeting Lock. He is going in with a fighter who is on the threshold of very big things. If Gamboa goes into this fight with the same sort of attitude that he did in his last two fights, then Gonzalez will find himself under pressure from the start. With his skills and experience, I think that Gonzalez can survive an early storm and make a decent showing, but probably not for very long. Gamboa looks too strong, too powerful and too fast, and I am expecting him to overwhelm Gonzalez around the seventh round.
