I don't know why so many posters comment on events that they have no knowledge of. There are a lot of people that continually criticise Calzaghe for not rematching Robin Reid, even though they weren't really paying attention to events at the time.

So, take it from someone who was actually following Calzaghe's career back then, here are the facts: After the fight, Reid was offered an immediate rematch. The money offered to him was the exact same amount that he got for the first fight. He turned the offer down. For his next fight, he instead fought Silvio Branco and lost, harming his ranking and marketability.

British TV had Calzaghe winning. The boxing magazines that I read at the time had Calzaghe winning. Reid himself had Calzaghe winning.

The above is not my opinion. It is not rumour or the result of bias. It is fact, based upon interviews that Reid himself gave where he confirmed that he was offered a rematch.

The suggestion that Calzaghe robbed him and/or then ducked a rematch is factually incorrect.
blah blah blah, when is he gonna rematch hopkins????

Plenty of people know it. I can't be the only one who has been following British boxing for more than 5 years.

Anyway, Silencers has posted an interview a couple of posts above yours where Reid confirms that he was offered a rematch and he turned it down.
I read an article with both Reid and Frank Warren's comments in it only two or three days ago, and Reid certainly did turn down a rematch. He can claim he wasn't offered enough money, whatever, but why is he suddenly entitled to more money than he accepted in the first place? He'd just lost a fight, FFS. He was worth LESS money after that.

Warren said Reid is a cheeky bastard and that he actually lost money on the Calzaghe-Reid promotion, and there's no way he was gonna lose even more money by offering Reid an even bigger purse than he deserved.

Reid should have took it, if he was so confident that he'd won. Which I don't think he was, because he admitted he didn't feel he'd won right after the fight, but later started telling the press how Calzaghe was running from him and he was robbed.

Reid is lucky he fought an injured Calzaghe. In a rematch against an 100% fit Calzaghe, I believe he would have been beaten comprehensively, just as he was against Lacy and Froch. Don't get me wrong, Reid was a good fighter back in the day and he could certainly ****, but he'd need more in his arsenal than a right hand to beat him. He hit Joe with bombs all night, but it simply wasn't enough to win. A rematch would prove nothing.

calzaghe destroyed him. what a great stoppage as well. sheika was punching calzaghe in the face and at that moment the ref intervened and saved sheika's life. remember this was the "power punching" calzaghe of lore sheika was dealing with. MY GOD BRUTAL.

Before Reid, Calzaghe underwent a wrist operation, and is paying a price for being a powerful puncher. Thornberry, while never a danger, stuck to his job. He was cut over the right eye in the first round, went down briefly in the second and lost 120-107, 119-109 and 119-108.
JOE CALZAGHE says he will never again take risks with his career as he prepares to make his American debut in Atlantic City on 7 August. Because of a painful left hand, the Welshman admits he did not have any sparring in the build-up to his World Boxing Organisation super-middleweight title defence against Rick Thornberry at the Cardiff International Arena on Saturday.
