Tax woes may force Floyd Jr. back in ring
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is reportedly facing “significant tax bills” and this might prompt the undefeated and former pound-for-pound champion to come out of retirement and face Manny Pacquiao this year.
According to UK-based The Daily Telegraph, the flamboyant American boxer “has been requested to meet unpaid IRS bills in the US” and that a fight with the Pinoy superstar should be enough to settle his woes.
The amount being mentioned is $6 million and a fight with Pacquiao, now the pound-for-pound champion of the world, will net Mayweather so much more than what he really needs.
“By all accounts, his IRS debts relate to 2007. In spite of having earned $20 million for fighting a giant in Wrestlemania last year, Mayweather is not exactly known for his frugal nature,” the report said.
Since he retired last June, six months after beating Ricky Hatton, it hasn’t been rosy for Mayweather who reportedly had $7 million worth of ***elry stolen from his home.
He fought Oscar dela Hoya in 2007 and made millions, a paycheck that can only be matched if he comes out of retirement and faces Pacquiao by the end of the year.
Pacquiao is set to fight Hatton on May 2 in Las Vegas, and the winner would definitely call out Mayweather’s name.
But the boxer who hasn’t lost in 39 fights has been quite elusive, saying everything concerning him and a comeback aren’t true, and then later on saying that he wants to see “what’s out there.”
“Mayweather is in a poker match. He wants to see how much is at stake out there. It’s a poker match. But if the price is right, I’m sure he will come out of retirement,” said Pacquiao’s adviser, Wakee Salud.
Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, said Mayweather is the next big fight after Hatton.
“Mayweather is the only one to beat Hatton so if Manny can knock him out in spectacular fashion it makes a Mayweather fight realistic and logical even though his style is a tough style for us,” he said. – Abac Cordero
