The first boxing fight that I saw when I was a kid was ALI vs. HOLMES in 1980. I was only 3 then. I was so young I couldn't remember what transpired in that fight for me to even be enticed by boxing. (it was the SUGAR RAY vs. HAGLER that did it.) I didn't know who won the fight.
When I grew up, all I ever knew was MIKE TYSON and ALI for when we were kids if someone is having a streetfight we go chanting "ALI ALI ALI". There was no LARRY HOLMES....
As years pass by, I saw these great fights featured by host Al Berenstain in "BOXING FINEST HOUR" and I just saw not the whole fight but rather clips of this particular fight. HOLMES was battering ALI on the ropes. ALI lost. I failed to even start it. I saw it only towards the end of the fight. Again I "missed the train."
I was so intrigue by the fight and the people in it specifically HOLMES. (because I have already a fair knowledge of ALI, his achievements and his fights...).
In the advent of the internet, cable tv and my teenage years, I became an avid boxing fan, but somehow, somehow, I lost tract of this fight. I forgot to remember that I promised myself to watch this fight. In my mind I just know this was the first fight that I saw! I just know that.
Last night, I saw the documentary Beyond the Glory of FOX Sports on LARRY HOLMES and man, when they showed his fight with ALI, my memories came back to me like streams of film clips about the time when my cousins (who where grown up that time) was watching the fight. How many there watching in the room, where they were seated, how the place of my aunt was at that time, the color of the window sheets, the texture of the floor. I remember during the fight, I can still remember the particular toy I was holding and playing with (its a jet fighter color white with streaks of red with a revolving device on top.)I even remember the place where I was seated with another cousin. Just by watching the documentary film memories of old came to me.
I also remembered my cousins voices and conversation all of them where gloomy at the end of the fight..except for one, my cousin named KUYA "LARRY". ONLY HIM. Maybe because of his namesake that why he rooted for him. Or maybe not...
Man it was really weird... It's like ALFRED HITCH**** PRESENTS
I just happen to share to you guys this experience that I had last night.Maybe I had the obligation..I dont know why but I feel like a had an obligation to share this exprience here in NSB...Maybe to give appreciation to one fighter who has been UNDERRATED UNAPPRECIATED ,till he got alot older in a fight with another great young HOLYFIELD.
But this one thing I know.... LARRY HOLMES was UNDERRATED... DEFINITELY Only no. 5 in ESPN all time GREAT HEAVYWEIGHT...... Perhaps the most Underated fighter of all Time.....He is very very good specially in NORTON FIGHT. I believe in his prime he could knock out ANYONE ANYBODY and EVERYBODY who ever became a champ in the HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION....you could even ARGUE that he may, HE JUST MAY have a STRONG CASE against ALI OR JOE LOUIS as the BEST HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHTER of ALL TIME....
Surfing the net, waiting for new thread or post in NSB..nothing to do...While waiting, fortunately I remember checking out the Beyond the Glory series...Fortunately I watched LARRY HOLMES...
