A bit nit-picky with the Andre Berto stuff imo. Yes his parents are from Haiti, but he (as I understand it) is in fact from the US, and of African decent. True that the term itself is clearly a result of the 'P.C.' movement, and the classification itself is rather questionable. However, he is black, and American, so the designation is not entirely inaccurate as I see it. And, by and large Haitian blacks are decedents of the slave trade as well, so again it is more of a mucky area then a mis-designation in my opinion.

Here's my problem with the term...A bit nit-picky with the Andre Berto stuff imo. Yes his parents are from Haiti, but he (as I understand it) is in fact from the US, and of African decent. True that the term itself is clearly a result of the 'P.C.' movement, and the classification itself is rather questionable. If, say Lennox Lewis, were walking down any given street in America and was spotted by someone who never in their life watched a fight, he'd be labeled "African-American." You wouldn't know from where he hails just by looking at him, and are merely replacing "Black" with "African-American".
If that's the sole intent (and it's clearly become the main use of the term), then just say Black fighter (or Black whatever). I've never in my life been called Irish-American, and never in my life took offense to being called White, even though Black and White are the vaguest descriptions to label a person.
With Berto - he knows from where his ancestors hailed, so to reach around that and still claim African is both unnecessary and absurd. The equivalent would be my claiming to be Spanish-American, since I technically have Spanish in my blood from generations long ago.Last edited by JakeNDaBox; 01-09-2009, 01:30 PM.Comment
