a main candidate for James Kirkland's March date on HBO is former three time world champ Verno Phillips. Do any of you guys hear any rumblings of this also? Any truth whatsoever of this? If so, though it is certainly a step up for Kirkland, I get the feeling Phillips isnt as shopworn as people believe and he will be too big of a step up. You guys?

I was thinking Phillips would murder Kirkland too, thats why I find this information even harder to believe. We'll see. Maybe Kirkland and Ann Wolfe think Phillips is done after that Paul Williams fight.Comment

Man I like Kirkland, but to put him in there with someone crafty like Phillips.
This could turn out like when they put Joel Julio in with someone like Quintana too early in his career and he got embarassed.
Not saying it would definently happen to Kirkland because he has been improving ALOT with each fight as far as head movement, punch variety, not getting over excited, and even working in a jab, but this might be 1 or 2 fights too early for Kirkland to get in with Phillips.
Look at someone alittle lower on the food chain for your next fight like Terrance Cauthen.Comment

Yeah, I dont know how true this is thats why I put it out there to see if any of you guys heard anything like that. Back to back HBO dates for Verno is hard to believe. Maybe HBO is tired of Kirkland and his soft touches. I doubt Golden Boy lets this fight come off.Comment

Verno Phillips is 39 years old, and was stopped in his last fight by Paul Williams. His 11th loss, BTW. I dont think the man has many top shelf victories left in him.Comment

Because of that, Kirkland and Ann Wolfe probably want the Phillips fight. I think however, Golden Boy will know better and chose to stay away from Phillips. I think he has at least a few more wins in him of the Kirkland caliber.Comment
