Vic just has that awkward style that only a fighter that is not going to be intimidated can beat him. Donaire fought timid until he landed the perfect counter shot.
Donaire was not timid at all, he was beating Darchiniyan when he KO'd him and had rocked him a few times in the previous rounds. He was landing hard right hands and counter lefts up until he KO'd Darchinyan

"I will KO Arce and Beltran"
By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

WBA/IBF/WBC super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs) is confident of knocking out Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs) on February 7th at The Pond, Anaheim, California and also has a warning for Arce’s manager Fernando Beltran. “I am upset with Beltran - the manager of Arce… He should keep his mouth shut and let Arce and myself do the talking. After I knockout Arce I will go to his corner and thank him for fighting me but then I might knock out Fernando Beltran. I plan on punishing Arce and will show him who is the better puncher and boxer.

As for the future? “After I defeat Arce I would like to fight the winner of the Montiel vs Donaire WBO title bout. I think Montiel will knockout Donaire but I am very confident I can defeat both of them.

“Another big fight I am after is to fight Israel Vasquez. I first boxed Vasquez at Freddie Roach’s gym in 2004 before I won the IBF flyweight title from Irene Pacheco. Again in 2007 we boxed again in the gym - he gave me great sparring but I am confident I will defeat him if we fight.

“2009 is the Year Of The Bull,” he concluded.
      “I am the Raging Bull!”

In 2008 Darchinyan scored his best win when he stopped Cristian Mijares in nine rounds to win the WBA and WBC titles. Jorge Arce was soundly defeated over twelve rounds by Cristian Mijares in 2007.
