Floyd Patterson (1960's):Boxing will save itself

There was just a interview of Floyd Patterson on ESPN Classic with him and and they ask him, "do you feel you can save boxing"? And he says "I don't think I can single-handedly save boxing, it will save itself. I can just give it a boost"...... Well then boxing went on to the 70's and 80's and we al know what happened then....so does that mean we will see a great era 10, 20 years from now??

The ******ass MMA fad will die off soon enuf. Even if it didn't boxing wouldn't be goin anywhere. Wit cable TV and the internet, the behind the scenes bull**** associated wit boxing as a business is more visible, but it's always been there. Boxing will be just fine and will surely blow up big again sometime. It's been better no doubt, but I don't buy into the **** about it dyin for a second.

boxing boom and bust's just like the economy... we've just reached the end of a great period (90s - early 2000s) and now it's in a little slump... it'll be back to it's highest heights again at some point

Its all a matter of perspective. We can only look back on 2008 5-6 years from now and really judge how good the year was. I think it was a great year in boxing but at the same time it was another awful year for the hw division and that seems to be the measuring stick that ppl take when judging the state of boxing in every era. I think the focus on boxing has shifted away from the hw division for now and ppl need to accept that the lower divisions are still having their blockbuster fights even if the hw division isn't.

That was after his great fight against George Chuvalo. In the UK boxing has become much more popular than it was 7-8 years ago. but in the US it would seem the trend is the opposite.
