Calzaghe a was nobody during the Prime Jones era or even during the Prime Hopkins era. Just another undefeated guy who wanted a shot.Comment

Can you imagine this Calzaghe (with power and better chin)
vs Prime Roy Jones?
Wow, shame it never happened.Comment

You are seeing it as how Calzaghe is NOW and how Roy was THEN. You gotta realize how much Calzaghe has lost in terms of power since he became plagued by injuries. The punch that cut Jones also broke his hand. They are brittle as **** dude.

I'd say a 1997 Calzaghe gives him a hell of a fight, the one who fought Eubank.

and then all of a sudden his head was sent flying into the back rowComment

A younger Calzaghe would have knocked out the Roy you saw recently. Roy went 12 because Calzaghe's hands are smashed up. That is the only reason he went the distance. Besides, in my opinion it should have been a stoppage somewhere around round 9. The Lacy fight should have also been stopped, it's pretty disgraceful that Lacy's corner didn't pull him out.

I wouldn't say Jones ducked Calzaghe, but I wouldn't say he was jumping at the chance to fight him either. Neither fighter ducked the other. What Calzaghe said was he'd want a huge check for fighting Jones. Who can blame him? It is a risky fight because Roy was excellent, but it works both ways. After all, Roy has said the same thing, according to Warren; that they had fights with Roy fall through because he always priced himself out. Roy did the same thing with Michalczewski. Some would say he ducked Michalczewski. Hopkins priced himself out of the Calzaghe fight.
I don't like all the talk of X-fighter ducking Y-fighter. It's never black & white, there are multiple factors to consider; Jones could fight easier fights in America for good money. Jones was in a different weight class, having moved up to light heavyweight in 1996 -- a whole year before Calzaghe became super middleweight champion by beating Eubank in 1997. Hopkins was a middleweight. He skipped super middleweight completely in 2006 and moved up two divisions.
So anyway... that's where you and I differ. Any talk of Jones beating Calzaghe prime for prime is merely speculation. I don't believe Roy would do as well against younger Calzaghe as some people believe. Joe would have always been a hard fight for Roy; he hit hard, fought hard for 3 minutes of every round, threw just as many punches as he does now, and was almost impossible to knock down. When he did get knocked down -- first time was in 2003 -- he got off the floor and won the fight in the same round by TKO. Calzaghe's heart and determination is unreal, and this is often what wins him fights: he will not acknowledge the possibility of losing.
I guess we will just have to agree to dissagree on this one since the fight happened in '08 instead of '01.Comment
