I wouldn't say he's as good as Lopez just yet. Mares still needs to find that balance between being agressive and being defensive. He gets hit too cleanly when he opens up with combinations. Nacho is doing a good job with him though. Definitely one to watch in the future. Dope beat. -

Hes just begging to get his a$$ handed to him, I mean who runs at a falling man just to headbutt him at 1:07. He should fight Morel if Morel beats Penalosa as Mares would be the mandatory.
Funny thing is, the mexicans at the univision boxing forum say this guy is Juanmas Salvador Sanchez and point out Mares 2 supposedly wins against Juanma in the amateurs. I think it would be a table turner as Mares would be the one going up in weight. Well facemask or not I say bring him on.Comment

I hope you're joking because anyone that saw that fight knows he went at Dios because Dios started wobbling and Mares tripped to try to KO him indefinitely. Why would he headbutt hm?Comment

Mares, now 22, entered the ring with a 15-0 (9) record and an already stellar status in his native Mexico. His amateur career included distinguished performances at both the Under-17 and Junior World Championships and expectations of a 2004 Olympic medal were so high that Mares was asked to appear in commercials for Coca-Cola

As an amateur, Mares compiled a record of 112-8 with 84 KOs. Mares won the U17 world championships and the bantamweight gold medal at the Central American games 2002 beating Juan Manuel López and the silver medal in the same division in 2003 at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. At the junior world championships 2004 he finished second losing to Aibek Abdimomunov. He participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics for his native country. There he was beaten in the first round of the Bantamweight (54 kg) division by Hungary's Zsolt Bedák in a highly controversial decision
