This, to me, is one of the most perfect fights ever. My personal favourite, unquestionably. I'd even have it ahead of Hagler vs Hearns, just because I got to see these two fighters for 15 rounds. I mean....
Two ATG's, fighting at more or less the peak of their powers.
Incredible intensity, skill, heart, guts....I mean, you can hear it in the commentators voice - they know history was being made in front of their eyes.
I know people say SRL got lured into fighting Duran's fight and should have fought like he did in the No Mas fight, but.....you know what? I'm glad he did. It made for a wondeful fight. Leonard proved everything he needed to in the fight.
I'm 24 now, same age as SRL was when he fought Duran. Which is just stagggering to me, especially when you consider that people like Dawson and Gamboa are still considered prospects at 26 these days.
I love Morales vs Barrera and Corrales vs Castillo, but this fights supercedes both considering the status of Duran and SRL in the ATGs list.
The fight had everything, barring a KD. Both got hurt and staggered at points, both throwing punches with mother****ing bad intentions. Great inside fighting, each fighter knowing that the other was going to smash him if he got complacent for even a second.
The fight was close too, each having periods of dominance.
This was probably the last time we saw a prime Duran, with footspeed, handspeed and relentless still there. And SRL was completely on it in the fight, his handspeed just blazing. It's remarkable to think that Duran was able to duck so many of SRL's punches when you see the blistering speed he threw them at.
The only thing I didn't like about Duran in this fight was not acknowledging SRL at the end. I know Duran was ****ing pumped for the fight and was all about the machismo, but you have to acknowledge the person who you're going into folklore with for this fight.
