color commentator
In all sports, the guy who does the play by play or blow by blow is the play by play announcer. The guy who sits next to him and provides analysis and expert opinions is the color commentator. He adds color to the announcing of the game, like a Roy Jones or lennox Lewis in boxing, John Madden in football and Walt Frazier in basketball. this role is usually reserved for an ex-participant of the sport in which is being televisedComment

Foreman
You are on the money about Foreman. What I can't stand about Merchant is that he hates fighters like Whitaker and Mayweather, two classic boxers, but gets a hard on for journeymen stiffs like Ward and gatti. Jones explained to the audience why guys like Whitaker, Mayweather, Wright and Hopkins were master boxers and how guys like Ward, Gatti, and Mayorga were one-dimensional and not great fightersComment

Merchant
technically he is, for he has never called the blow by blow for HBO. He has served as an HBO analyst for over 30 years. First with Don Dunphy, then Barry Tompkins, and Jim Lampley. He never fought and favors barbaric brawls over great boxing and strategy. both Foreman and Jones ripped him, saying how could he comment on certain things in the ring if he never fought. Very valid claims. The guys who fought in the trenches give a perspective that a writer could never come up withComment
