Why are certain Floyd fans SO overprotective of him?

Im not speaking for all of his fans, but there are some diehard fanatics that DONT want to see him in the ring with fighters that pose an immenent threat to Floyd. There are even some Floyd fanatics that dont even want to see him back in the ring at all. Thier excuse?..."Floyd's accomplished everything there is to accomplish, let him be" Now my question is: If my favorite fighter is in his prime, and he retires without facing the top dogs in the sport, why would i NOT want him to prove himself? Its like watching an excellent movie, and shutting it off before the end because you feel that what you've seen so far is good enough. You will even hear these fanatics use excuses like "Marg or Cotto dont deserve to be in the ring with Floyd" Its as if they're against anything that might harm Floyd.
As i stated in another post: "Floyd fans have to be the ONLY fans to make excuses for thier fighter NOT having to face challenges. Why woud u NOT want to see your fighter pushed to the limit? Im a big fan of Cotto, Pac, and JMM. Why would i NOT want to see them in the ring with the best possible opponents? I would never understand you guys"
Before i get the usual remarks like: "you're just a hater", or "Floyd retired, leave him alone", let me say that i think Floyd is one of the best boxers of our era. His skills are unmatched. My question is....What good is it, if you're not putting those skills up against the best?
Another thing i will never understand is how you fanatics defend everything excuse Floyd makes. Why should u as a fan care about what fight makes more financial sense? How does that benefit you? Why would u not want to see Floyd in a dogfight with someone who's gonna push him to the limit, rather than watch him take on an easy opponent like Baldomir for example?
You guys act more like overprotective grandmothers rather than actual fight fans who want to see competitive matchups. Its sad!Comment

I can understand why. His boxing skills are the best I have seen. That doesn't mean he is unbeatable, a skill pressure fighter have a chance againts him, especially at 147 pounds. Too bad, he doesn't have the guts to go with his skills.
His retirement have something to do with the fear and the risk of losing a fight with Cotto, Margarito and Williams. The pressure of boxing fans for him fighting the best at welterweight led him into retirement.Comment

This is a typical Floydboy response whenever a critical, yet valid point is made about Floyd. How about u contribute something positive to the thread instead of bashing the TS. Its a legitimate question. What are your thoughts?Last edited by deevel79; 12-24-2008, 04:52 PM.Comment

Guys, im a big Mayweather fan. Theres a lot of guys that hate him on this forum. Their justifications are, right fully so , that he did'nt face Cotto or Margarito.
I understand your frustrations. Im not only a major fan of Floyd, but more of a boxing fan. I as a boxing fan wanted Floyd to fight Cotto and Margarito. Some of you guys feel he was scared of them both... thats your opinion and you guys are entitled to it.
But, i know that had'nt he retired he would have definetly faced Cotto... he was just waiting for a build up, like his and De La Hoya fight.
I honestly believe he beats both fighters... Cotto would'nt last 12 rounds with him, imo, and Margarito will be out boxed but Floyd can not KO Margarito. Margarito is too much of a warrior. This is my view point of the fight.
As a boxing fan i wanted to see these fights happen. Hey, you never know we may still be able to witness them.
But other than these two fighters, theres no one out there for him to prove his greatness against. I watched an interview with Emmanuel Steward where he was asked about a fantasy match between Hearns and Mayweather. He said Hearns would easily beat him. But then said Floyd needs to beat the best WW in his own era before beong compared to WW in previous eras.
I think people need to understand that he only moved up to WW to get the De La Hoya fight. I dont believe he had any attention of actually dominating the weight. Moving up 5 weight classes is a huge accomplishment. But i think some of you guys just pick on the fact that he had'nt faced the best welters in order to critisize him. If Floyds prime is now, then your basically discrediting all other opponents hes faced as he beat them with ease even though he werent in his prime...
He may still be in his prime. I can definetly see him coming back to face Pacman. And if Margarito hopefully beats Cotto, we may see the match that we've all been waiting for, between Floyd and Margarito.
I'd rather see a Mayweather vs Margarito fight than a Mayweather vs Cotto fight.Comment

Pretty fair and unbiased, but do u honestly think Margarito will give Floyd a harder time than Cotto? Just because Marg was able to beat Cotto, doesnt mean he will beat Floyd. What Marg used to beat Cotto is something that Floyd doesnt posses. Relentlesness, pressure, power, and a chin that can stand up to a mack ***ing truck. LOL. I see Floyd boxing circles around Margarito. Marg is just too slow. Even Cotto looked like SRL for the first 6 rounds against Marg. Imagine how fast Floyd will look. In my opinion, Cotto gives Floyd a much harder fight.Comment
