  • Lucian Bute, Jean Pascal Eye Redemption in 2009

The Canadian boxing scene took some heavy hits in 2008. Many of the top Canadian fighters are looking for redemption in 2009. During the twelve months of 2008, IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute was nearly knocked out by Librado Andrade, Jean Pascal lost a decision to Carl Froch, Steve Molitor was knocked out by Celestino Caballero, Herman Ngoudjo lost to Paulie Malignaggi and Jochim Alcine was stopped by Daniel Santos. A bit of a sour year for Canada on the world stage. 2009 will look to re-build.

Bute will be business as usual as he will most likely face Mads early this year and in all likelyhood a rematch with Andrade will be the mandatory and I highly doubt that will be a very competitive fight like the first time.

Pascal is very capable of coming back from the loss, I see a strong year for him which will probably end 09 as the #1 in an alphabet title ranking.

Alcine, most likely not look like top dog when he faces Santo's in a rematch.

Molitor's fate can go anywhere from here. I hope another world title is in his future but it is hard to say.

As for Ngoudjo, I see him winning the title on Jan 30 to bring a strong start to 2009 for Canada. Diaconu is also hopfully going to be more active.

yeah ur right.. i couldn't agree more!!.. it wont be competitive this time... Andrade will probably knock bute out in the first half of the fight. That it is only if the ref is not canadian!!.. cuz we all know that if the ref is canadian then it is very possible that Andrade won't get the victory even if he actually knocks Bute out!!(again)

They should both do their rematches. Both were pretty good fights.

I actually thought that this article might be reporting that Bute vs Pascal was a possibility in 2009.

I would like to see Pascal against someone like Bika. It seems that Froch-Taylor-Kessler are in negotiations at the moment, maybe Bute could face whoever gets left out. It seems certain that he will be fighting Larsen though, who I know very little about.

Molitor is still a very good fighter, and I hope it isn't too long before we see him up against Vasquez, Marquez, Lopez or another top name. There is enough talent in that division that we should have to see anymore mismatches.

Maybe Molitor vs Ponde De Leon could be put together? Both need to try and get back in the mix.
