  • Looking at 2009... New Words From an “Old” Friend

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - I heard from my old friend Tom Thompson the other day.

He’s only an “old friend” in the newfangled 21st century definition of the word… seeing how we’ve never actually met, we’ve spoken just twice and the tangible structure of our relationship has been largely built on a series of cyber debates over Presidential politics, college football and Bruce Springsteen music.

But above all else, Tom and I like to “talk” boxing.

And while I’ve had to endure his sometimes suspect views on Floyd Mayweather Jr. (he picked Gatti), Winky Wright (he picked Trinidad) and Bernard Hopkins (he picked Tarver) over the years, he’s also been right often enough to warrant the occasional return chat.

So when pressed for an idea on what to include in my holiday week column from a pre-Christmas retreat in the shockingly frigid Smoky Mountains, I decided to drop a line to Thompson family compound in Louisiana and pick his brain as the calendar flipped one day closer to 2009.

In the interest of full disclosure - and though his full-time pursuits make him more “business guru” than ace journalist or in-ring expert - he did give the latter two a try with the launch of the diamond-in-the-rough TigerBoxing.com Web site in the fall of 2004.

Though “Tiger” never got the exposure of many counterparts elsewhere on the Internet, it dwarfed all but a few in terms of quality, both through the acumen of its writers - Kieran Mulvaney, Kevin Iole, and, well… me, for example - and its pursuit of compelling feature content rather than hit-and-run opinion. I'd rather see Pavlik fight Abraham. With all the bouncing around Paul Williams is doing, he's leaving a sour taste in my mouth about it. I wish he'd just pick a division and settle there. Am I the only one not interested in a Williams-Pavlik fight?

Yea, you might be the only one. I see that fight as exciting though I don't know how Paul could win as he's certainly not the boxer that Nard is.
I don't know why you have the "sour taste" as Paul is going after the biggest game wherever he can find it. THAT has made me a fan.

physically (Paul weighed in at 153 for Verno) and experience wise,.. Paul is almost but not quite ready for Pavlik,.. if he could be patient for another 6-12months,.. then maybe,.. there are already guys at 154 that are potentially more dangerous for Paul to fight.(Kirkland,Angulo, and Martinez)

PAUL WILLIAMS is my favorite fighter,he bounces around so much bacause everyone is afraid to fight him!! Margarito dont want none!!Forest dont want none!!Pavlik-WILLIAMS might be the most necessary fight in boxing!!Kirkland and Angulo are still prospects though,Im sure if Martinez wanted some PAUL would give him some

Williams is bouncing around so he can fight creditable fighters. He was having a hard time lining up anyone at 147 pound division. He feels confident that he can fight at other weights, and to this point he has proved it, so why not. It will be interesting to see how long he does this for. There will onlys be superstars at 147, 154, 160 and 168. How long does he go back nad forth beating people? I think right now, the comfort is 147 & 154. there is enough talent there to keep him busy...should anyone want to keep him busy.

Pavlik needs to fight Rubio and then Abraham. There is no if, ands, or buts. Just get it done. I also don't think his image has been tarnished as mentioned in the article. I think he got beat by a guy that is going to the Hall of Fame and has shown for nearly 20 years that he can fight with anyone. Pavlik belongs at 160 for now.
