The difference is prior to Tszyu; Hatton was a good inside fighter that kept is hands free and throwing. If he had kept his hands moving and not grappled to wear down his opponents afterwards, there would be less criticism and of course, no reason to break them up in the clinch since there would be no clinching. It was a good strategy at that time when he fought Tszyu because it was probably a "must," but in the end, it back-fired.
